Dahmer Is Caught
At around 11:30 at night on July 22, 1991, police find a man who is stumbling through the streets, partially clothed, and handcuffed
The man, Tracy Edwards, says he was lured into Dahmer's apartment and almost killed. He tells police that Dahmer forced him onto the bed and tried to kill him with a knife
Upon arrival at the apartment, police find photographs of dead bodies and dismembered limbs strewn around the apartment, which is sufficient evidence to arrest Dahmer
Further investigation of the apartment led to the discovery of a severed head and other body parts in the refrigerator, a heart in the freezer, as well as numerous heads and skulls out in the open and more gruesome photos
There was reason to believe that Dahmer practiced cannibalism and necrophilia on his victims. He had also drilled holes into some of the skulls; he would pour acid or boiling water inside to try and turn victims into mindless zombies
Dahmer On Trial
Dahmer was indicted on 17 murder charges. Despite the clear evidence and the fact that he had already confessed to police, he plead not guilty by way of insanity
The jury didn't buy the insanity plea, and he was found guilty of 15 counts of murder after 5 hours of deliberation. He received 15 life sentences totaling 957 years in prison
Death In Prison
Dahmer would be subject to two separate attacks while in prison. The first involved an inmate trying to slit Dahmer's throat with a razor blade. He would escape this incident but was later killed when another inmate bludgeoned him in the head
Conflicting stories say the weapon was either a broom handle or a bar used for curling weights
Dahmer was brought to justice because of the fact that his victim was able to free himself and find the authorites. Police went to the scene of the attack, where Dahmer had made no efforts to hide the incriminating evidence, and was immediately arrested. He confessed, tried to get off easy by pleading insanity, but was ultimately sent to jail where he would later meet his fate.
Tools used to torture and dismember victims were found and sent to FBI headquarters, along with some of the remains. They underwent chemical, biological and toolmark analyses
