What is the point of drawing or painting a still life?
Objects were often placed into a painting to tell the viewer something about the subjects.

ex. The blemished apples refer to the sin of man
A style of still life painting that focused on the idea of life being temporary.
They reminded us that you can't take anything with you when you die.
Items were a symbol for Vanity (fåfänga) Every item had its own meaning.

Draw from observation
Create form using VALUE not line
Create a complete drawing using charcoal pencils
Learn a brief history of still lifes
Create a value scale using charcoal
Draw a rolled piece of paper using charcoal
Draw fabric using charcoal
Create at least three thumbnail drawings (using pencil)
Begin drawing still life by creating a very light line drawing with pencil
Use charcoal to define form and value (Make sure to include all ranges of gray that appear in your value scales)
Use appropriate design techniques to plan a successful composition
