After his executive officer was executed, Funk immediately formed headquarter soldiers into a combat unit for assault, and attacked 15 houses and took 30 solders without any causalities.
When he was ordered to surrender by a german officer, and was outnumbered by german solders, he pulled his machine gun and shot at all of the solders and the officer and shouted to the other americans to seize the enemies weapons.

He assembled a combat unit while taking fire by artillery shells and enemy solders
Funk's actions and heroic disregard for his own safety were directly responsible for the recapture of a vastly superior enemy force.
