America and Aspen's connection started when they were young and Aspen was friends with America's older brother Kota.
When they met, they instantly fell in love and set up a secret meeting place in a tree house in America's front yard. They would meet secretly after Illea's curfew just to talk and be with each other.
They then started secretly dating/seeing each other for 2 years up until the selection.
Aspen wanted America to sign up for the Selection so that she could have the chance of having a better life. America didn't want to, but she also wanted to make Aspen happy, so she signed up.
Right before the Selection Lottery drawing, Aspen broke up with America because he thought he wasn't giving her what she deserved. America was devastated and now actually wanted to leave.
Soon later, America was selected in the Lottery and sent to the palace to compete in the Selection.
America see's Aspen again once he apears as one of the palace guards after being drafted.
America and Aspen start seeing each other again secretly, but America now has a tough choice to make. Will she choose Aspen or Maxon?
America and Maxon
America first sees Maxon on TV and her first thoughts of him were that he was stuck-up and shallow.
Though, when America first arrives at the palace, Maxon and her soon become "friends" and her view of Maxon completely changes.
Soon enough, America and Maxon start seeing each other more and more. In addition, they start making up secret gestures that they preform when they want to see each other. For example, if America wants to see Maxon, she will tug on her ear and then wait for Maxon to tug his ear back.
Except, when Aspen arrives as a guard at the palace, America finds herself in a really tough position.
Maxon admits to America that he has really strong feelings for her, but America says she still needs time to make sure she feels the same way. Though, Maxon says he will keep her in the competition until she makes up her mind or decides to leave.
