Transcript of Science Cafe
The science cafe format has spread across the globe in a grassroots way, adapting to different cultures and audiences. Despite this diversity, there are two shared values reflected in every science cafe:
First Second Science cafes actively engage everyone attending. A successful science cafe creates a comfortable atmosphere that invites everyone to join the conversation. Science cafes welcome people who do not typically engage in discussions about science. Science Cafes are not exclusive club meetings
for scientists and science majors.
Best of all, it is not a lecture! It is a forum for exploring new frontiers in Science and Technology. The evening is dedicated to informal discussion, eating and drinking. What does a meeting look like? Each meeting is organized around an interesting topic of conversation.
A scientist gives a brief presentation and sometimes
shows a short video clip to kick off discussion. There are many variations. Some begin with a game or a science trivia quiz.
Others begin with casual conversation between attendees.
Refreshments can be purchased, or served free if the organizing group has money to cover the cost.
Drinks are purchased by the individual. Cafe Names Each cafe develops its own name
