Example 2: Blinking
One take-away from the book is that how we blink is a function of our experiences, training, and knowledge. For example, prejudice is so unconsciously woven into our society that, despite our best intentions, at an unconscious level it can lead to really bad blinks. This is partly why tall people are sometimes seen as natural leaders when there is no actual proof of this. An example of this could be the "undercover racism" that is used around the world. For example when a man is stopped in his car by the police several times just because of his race, this is called racial profiling. Police officers probably unconsciously thought he was doing something wrong just because of his race.
Example 1: Firefighters
Gladwell explains a story of a group of firefighters in Cleveland. The firefighters where trying to put out a fire in a burning apartment building. They went into a room that what full of flames and started spraying the room with the water hose. The flames where not going out and the lieutenant realized that there was something wrong. without even hesitating he ordered his crew out of the building. shortly after they exiting the building the part that they where in completely collapsed. Gladwell explains that this instint decision made by the lieutenant save their lives. This example reminds me of a time when my cousin was making his college decisions. He first wanted to go The University of Virginia. One of his friends was trying to convince him to go to Virginia Tech. He was actually considering going to Virginia tech but then he made his final decision.
Summary
Blink is a book about decisions. In the book it is basically saying that as humans we have two different types of decision making. There is analytical decision making. Analytical decisions are the conscious decisions that we make; the ones we have to think about. as humans we also have unconscious decision making. these are the decisions that we make with ever even thinking about it. They are often reflexive decisions; decisions that are made on the spot. in the book Gladwell explains that reflexive decisions are often the best decisions. For example there was a fire at my peachtree ridge a few weeks ago. it was probably a good decision for the students who decided that they where going to be late to school that day because the fire could have killed someone.
