Blake Mycoskie thought he was on a work-free vacation in Argentina in 2006. However, after seeing countless, poverty-stricken children without shoes, Blake imagined an inspired method to help the them. Creating a for-profit business that utilized the traditional Argentine alpargata shoe was the seemingly unlikely response.
THE TOMS STORY
Blake’s revolutionary idea was to match every pair of purchased TOMS, which stands for ‘Tomorrow's Shoes,’ with a new pair given to a child in need. The idea is known as
alpargatas
SHOES FOR TOMORROW
Throughout its first business year, TOMS, located in Santa Monica, California, sold about 10,000 pairs of shoes. Blake and his family traveled back to Argentina at the end of the year to give shoes to all of the children there. In October 2011, TOMS achieved a giant victory. It gave away its
two millionth pair of shoes.
