How does the poet use language to create atmosphere?

The poet uses personification to create an eerie atmosphere at the start of the poem as the door 'gaped for us ajar.' This makes it sound like the door is waiting, like an open mouth ready to swallow the men up. It creates a sense of danger and makes the reader worry for the visitors.
