What strategies can you use to solve a linear equation, to find the slope and the y- intercept?
Why is it helpful to use a linear model for a set of data?
It is helpful to use a linear model for a set of data because it helps you predict data. If there is a piece of data missing, you can find the missing dots by completing a linear graph or table that has a constant rate that increases or decreases.
How would you find the equation for a linear function in the following situations?

Find slope (m) or (x)
When having a small group of data, with a linear equation, you can create larger group of data, you can help predict data along a linear line in a graph or table.
Find Y- intercept (b)
First of all you find your clue words;

Dependent Variable: Cost (c or y)

Independent variable: Hours (t or x)

Y- intercept: $10 dollars, because before working she earned $10 dollars, her starting point.
Katy just started babysitting her neighbors (2 kids), because it was her first time babysitting, they gave Katy
$10 dollars as a head start
. She will
get payed $15 dollars the hour.
Equation: y= 15x + 10
To find the equation in a given table, you could just count the amount that is increasing or decreasing the x and y. To find the y- intercept, continue table or find the value that has y when x equals 0.

Equation: y= 3x +3
To find an equation in a graph you could count the amount of distance that is increasing or decreasing from one point to another. Or grab two coordinates from graph. Using those coordinates make a table to find slope and y-intercept.
In the coordinate table, first subtract and then divide.
Equation: y =0.5x +5
Example: 500= 5x + 245
Equation: y= 5x(51) +245
Example: m= 5 (3,6) To find the y- intercept, follow following steps.

As you can see, first you write the equation then subtract to leave x alone, and then divide.
