EDSON ARANTES ''PELE'' NASCIMENTO
Transcript of EDSON ARANTES ''PELE'' NASCIMENTO
BY: KELLEY #13
Pele was one of the worlds best soccer players. He won 3 World Cups and scored 1,285 goals over the 22 years he played. His appearance on NASL gave the American League instant credibility and made millions of Americans aware of the sport. He made American soccer famous!
Pele began playing soccer for a local minor-league club when he was a teenager, but he was discovered at the age of 11 by one of the country's premier players, Waldemar De Brito. When Brito brought Pele to Sao Paulo, he declared to the disbelieving directors of the professional team in Santos, ''This boy will be the greatest soccer player in the world.'' He was right! His first day he scored right away when he was only 16.

IMPORTANT EVENTS IN PELE'S LIFE
THE ONE AND ONLY... PELE!!!
-the best soccer player of his time-
Pele was born on October 23, 1940 in Tres Coracos, Brazil and his parents called him Dico. He was the oldest of two siblings. He was raised in a very poor family and shined shoes for money. Pele's father, Dondinho, was a former soccer player himself and was a decent center forward, until his career was halted by a fractured leg. He couldn't raise enough money for his family.
Though Pele was only in his late teens, he played like a 20 year old veteran. He played for Brazil in 3 World Cups: 1958, 1962, and 1970. In 1966 he married and had two daughters(one named Kelly)and a son between the years of 1967-1978. He sadly divorced in 1982, but remarried in 1994 and had twin boys. Unfortunately like many celebrities, Pele got divorced again and hasn't remarried. Outside of his personal life, he has been a global ambassador for the sport.
Pele has had a lot of important events in his life. One of his most memorable events was when he was a young poor boy just playing soccer on the streets and was noticed, later even becoming the best soccer player in the world. From someone that came from so little and coming so far in life is a dream come true. Another important event in his life was winning the 1958 World Cup in Sweden 5-2 against Sweden in the finals only when he was 17! Pele's other special moment in his life was when he played for N.Y. Cosmos and made the whole U.S notice the sport.
HARDSHIPS & OBSTACLES
Despite Pele's fame and fortune he
had some very hard times. First of all, he grew up in a poor family in a poor town. Secondly, he has been divorced 2 times and now is a 74 year old man with no wife. Lastly, in 1966, Pele had a series of brutal attacks by opposing defenders who played for England. They injured his legs and Brazil was bounced from the World Cup after 1 round.
GOALS IN WC :8
''It seems that God brought me to earth with a mission to play soccer.''
'' I have a special
feeling for scoring a with
my head.'' he said.

Pele and Messi are both undersized soccer
players, but they both make it work. That is
why they are both of my favorite players.
Also,in my opinion, you have an
advantage for being short
A 24 year old soccer player
who plays for Barcelona
When my grandpa was 10 he moved to Washington D.C. and met another 10 year old boy from Brazil. They were great friends until my grandpa's friend had to move back to Brazil. He came back 31 years later to visit my grandpa. By then, my grandpa had got married and had my dad who was 16. My grandpa's friend had studied to be a translator and he actually had been helping Pele learn English!
My grandpa's friend said he had been teaching Pele English. My grandpa told him that his son(my dad, Matt) loved soccer and was a big fan of Pele. He told my dad that maybe he could have Pele gave him a call sometime. My dad of course freaked out! About one week later, Pele called and asked, '' May I speak to Matthew Flanagan? ''
My dad answered it and Pele and him said hello. Pele said,''Maybe we could kick the ball around sometime,'' ''That would be great!'' my dad said excited. Sadly he never actually did, but my dad said it was amazing just to talk to him. The next day my dad told all his friends in high school, but no one believed
I'm so inspired by Pele's passion and dedication to the game. He made America notice the sport of soccer and that is a big achievement (because we seem like a pretty stubborn country). I may not of grown to love soccer as much as I do without him.
He was the grandfather of American soccer. I mean it can't get any better than that! Another thing that inspired me was how Pele never gave up under any circumstances. I picked Pele as my inspirational character because he made people believe they could do anything no matter how long it takes, that you will get there. (Also because my dad wanted me to write about him meeting Pele:)
THANK YOU FOR WATCHING!
