The Journey By: Mary Oliver The Journey What Does It Mean? Works Cited One day you finally knew What you had to do,and began Though the voices around you Kept shouting Their bad advice-- Through the whole house Began to tremble And you felt the old tug At your ankles "Mend my life!" But you din't stop You knew what you had to do Thought the wind pried With its stiff fingers At the very foundations Thought their melancholy Was terrible It was already late Enough, and a wild night And the road full of falllen Branches and stones But little by little As you left their voices behind, The stars began to burn Thought the sheets of clouds' And there was a new voice Which you slowly Recognize as your own, That kept you company AS you strode deeper and deeper into the world..... Journey Influences Walt Whitman Cape Cod Landscape Edna St. Vincent Millay Henry David Thoreau -"To live in this world' you must be able to do 3 things: To love what is mortal; To hold it against your bones knowing your life depends on it; And, when it comes time to let it go, let it go." -"When it's over' I wanted to say all my life I was a bride married to amazement. I was a bridegroom taking the world into my arms." 1. Oliver, Mary. "Mary Oliver" Poets. 1997-2010. http://www.Poets.org/poet.php/prmPID/265
