Unbiased When Atticus is explaining to Jem why he made him read to Ms.Dubose he says, "I wanted you to see what courage real courage is , instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with gun in his hand. It's when you know you're licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what." (Lee,149).
This shows us Atticus is insightful because Atticus truly knows what courage means and gives us a clear and deeper understanding of what it is, as well as many other things. Insightful Understanding When Atticus is talking to Uncle Jack about Scout's bad language he says,"children are children, but they can spot an evasion quicker than adults, and evasion simply muddles 'em... bad language is a stage all children go through, and it dies with time when they learn their not attracting attention with it."(Lee,116).
This quote shows that Atticus is understanding because instead of just punishing Scout for her behavior, he accurately explains Scout's reasoning behind her language and behavior and acts accoredingly which shows us that he is very good at understanding peoples' behavior. Courageous When Atticus tells Scout that he knows he is going to lose the case and Scout questions his motive Atticus says," Simply because we were licked a hundred years before we started is no reason for us not to try to win."(Lee,101).
This shows us he is courageous because despite the fact that he knows he can't win, he'll still take the case because he believes it is the right thing to do. This shows us how courageous he is. Modest Unbiased When Scout questions why Atticus never goes hunting anymore Ms.Maudie replies,"He put his gun down when he realized God had given him an unfair advantage over living things... people in their rights minds never take pride in their talents."(Lee,130).
This shows us that Atticus is modest because he never showed off his talent to anyone. In fact, when he realized he was a lot better than everyone at it he stopped shooting completely, this is very modest. When Atticus to explain empathy to Scout he says,"You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view...until you climb into his skin and walk around in it."(Lee,39).
This shows us that Atticus always makes unbiased decisions because he never gives one side more credibility than the other, he always considers everything. Ethical When Scout is using her gun, Atticus tells her not to shoot Mockingbirds because its a sin, Ms.Maudie then explains that he said that because he believes,"Mockingbirds don't do one thing but make music for us to enjoy...they don't do one thing but sing their hearts out for us."(Lee,119).
This shows us that Atticus is ethical because it is proof that he makes moral choices such as to not bother things that don't bother you. Equality When Scout tells her father tells that everyone is calling him a nigger-lover he says,"Don't say nigger Scout that's common."(Lee,99).
This proves that Atticus is very stern when it comes to racism, and this is only because Atticus strongly believes in equality.
Honesty When Jem asks Atticus if they are poor Atticus simply replies,"We are indeed."(Lee,27).
This is clear proof that Atticus is a very honest man. Instead of coming up with some excuse he give Jem the honest answer even though the answer is humiliating. Tranquil When Atticus was outside the jail cell and was surrounded by a mob of aggresive men he calmly said,"You can turn around and go home again,"(Lee,202).
This shows us that Atticus is tranquil because despite being heavily outnumbered and on the verge of a beating he managed to keep calm. Keeping calm under pressure is a sign of a tranquil person. Determined Devoted When a group of people including Link Deas tells Atticus he shouldn't have taken the case Atticus says,"Link that boy might go to the chair, bit he's not going till the truth's told."(Lee,195).
This is a powerful statement that not only shows Atticus' quest for justice but how determined he is to give Tom a chance. Even though a group of people are contradincting his decisions, Atticus determination is stronger than them. After Aunt Alexandra tell Atticus to tell his kids to live up to their family's expectations he tells them exactly that, but then he says,"I don't want you to remember it, forget it."(Lee,179).
This is a strong indication that Atticus is devoted to the well being of his children because despite what others try to pressure him to do, his devotion to his family leads him to make the decisions that he knows are best for his family. Pacifist When Scout tries to protect Jem outside the jail by kicking someone, Atticus quickly disapproves by telling her,"That'll do Scout, don't kick folks."(Lee,204).
This proves to us that Atticus is a pacifist because even though the strangers are being a little aggressive to his kids, Atticus will not tolerate violence in the slightest even if it just in retaliation.
