"Dulce et Decorum Est"
This poem tells the experience of the persona on the battlefield. "Gas! GAS! " and " All went lame; all blind;
Drunk with fatigue; deaf even to the hoots " are among the many examples used to show the atrocities of war.
The poem also gives us an idea of the conditions the soldiers had to face while out on the warfront.
"This is the Dark Time, My Love"
This poems deals with the pain and suffering of war. It refers to the struggles of Guyana during British colonization. The ' brown beetles' refers to tankers used to oppress the citizens. Phrases such as " It is the festival of guns, the carnival of misery " helps to show the theme of war.
Here are the two poems!

THANK YOU FOR WATCHING
Oxymoron
In the poem " This is the dark time, my love" oxymoron is seen twice. " It is the festival of guns" and " The carnival of misery.
Simile
In "Dulce Et Decorum Est", it says "coughing like hags". Hags are old women who suffer with disease and this shows how badly affected the soldiers were.
Metaphor
-In "Dulce Et Decorum Est", it says "drunk with fatigue". This is to show the state in which the soldier marched on, as if they were overdosed with fatigue.

-In "This is The Dark Time, My Love", it says "all round the land brown beetles crawl about". This compares the sight of the soldiers marching in mud with that of brown beetles crawling over each other in filth.
Irony
Irony is seen in the title of the poem " Dulce et Decorum Est" as in the poem the poet clearly shows how this is not true. The poet refers to this as " the old lie"
Themes
Appearance vs Reality
In the poem " Dulce et Decorum Est" The impression is given to the soldiers at first that is a sweet and honorable thing to die in battle for your country. But the poem shows that this is not the case, but rather it is horrific. The poet says, " The old Lie; Dulce et Decorum est
Pro patria mori. "
Death
Both poems share the theme of death as it is closely related to the main theme of war.
In " Dulcet et Decorum Est" it shows some of the ways how the soldiers died, such as " Five-Nines that dropped behind" and " He plunges at me, guttering, choking, drowning."
In " This is the Dark Time, My Love" shows the effects of war on the people. In the poem it says, " It is the man of death..."
Power vs Powerlessness
In the poem " This is the Dark Time, My Love" there is a sense of power and powerlessness where the British has the power and the civilians are powerless to stop their invasion. In the poem it says, " Watching you sleep and aiming at your dream" This line gives the impression that the British took away their hope leaving the civilians powerless.
