By: Cheyenne Diller and Amanda Heinbaugh Cell Analogy Comparing a Cell to a Bee Hive By Amanda Heinbaugh and Cheyenne Diller Cytoskeleton Plasma Membrane The plasma membrane is similar to the outside of a beehive. The plasma membrane regulates what enters and leaves the cell. This is similar to the outside of a beehive, because the outside of a beehive is what protects the bees and all the things inside of the hive. Cytoplasm The cytoplasm is similar to the inside of a beehive because the cytoplasm is where the products are assembled, finished and shipped. The inside of the beehive is where everything happens and is the center of activity. Endoplasmic Reticulum
The rough and smooth endoplasmic reticulum (ER) are similar to the honey combs in a beehive. The main function is to act as a transport system. The honey combs are a way for the bees to store their honey so that it can then be transported and made into honey that can actually be sold in stores. Mitochondria The mitochondria is similar to the honey in a beehive. The mitochondria supplies the energy for the cell, much like honey supplies a drive for the bees. Without the need to make honey, the bees would have no reason to do what they do and without the mitochondria, the cell would have no ability to do what it does. A cell is like a beehive because all the parts of a cell work together similar to the way a bee hive works. Everything has it's own job and without all the parts functioning properly, neither a cell or beehive could work.

. (Rough and Smooth) Lysosomes The nucleus functions the same way that a queen bee does in a beehive. The nucleus is basically like the brain of the cell, and controls all of the functions. This is the same as the queen bee, because she is in control of the beehive. Nucleus The function of the nucleolus is very similar to the function of the drone bee. This is because the nucleolus' primary function is to assemble ribosomes. Ribosomes resemble the larvae in the beehive, and a drone be is used to make the larvae. Just like the the nucleolus is used to make the ribosomes. Nucleolus The worker bees in a beehive are very similar to the golgi apparatus. The golgi apparatus modifies, sorts, and packages molecules from the ER. The worker bees basically do the same thing. They make and produce all of the honey in the beehive. Golgi Apparatus Ribosomes are very similar to bee larvae. They create the things that are the workers. Also the drone bee, which is compared to the nucleolos produces larvae as the nucleolus produces ribosomes. Ribosomes Centrioles are similar to the bees wings. The centrioles are crucial to the cell division. They allow the cells to move and divide in order to create new cells. This is similar to bees wings, because their wings are what allows them to move and are the only way that bees can do their jobs. Centrioles The cytoskeleton is similar to the hive stand in a beehive. The cytoskeleton is the support structure in a cell. The same way that a hive stand supplies support for the beehive, the cytoskeleton provides support for the cell. Lysosomes are very similar to the bee keeper. A bee keeper packages and sells the good honey, and he gets rid of the bad honey that can not be sold. Lysosomes do the same thing as well. They break down and absorb unwanted material taken in by the cell.
