Meaning Of The Song
Overall it is a narrative about a man who is in love with a woman who passed away and as a result fell in love with the artist, as the artist fell in love with him. This is relevant because Frank ocean revealed that his first love was a man.

He is an American singer, songwriter and rapper from New Orleans, Louisiana.
Better known from his stage name as Frank Ocean.
In 2012, Ocean finished second place in the BBC's Sound of 2012 poll. His debut studio album, Channel Orange, was released in July 2012, promoted with three charting singles: "Thinkin Bout You", "Pyramids", and "Sweet Life".
Ocean started his career as a ghostwriter for artists such as Brandy, Justin Bieber, Beyonce Knowles and John Legend. in 2009, he met Tricky Stewart, who helped him sign a contract with Def Jam Recordings as a solo artist. Ocean joined Los Angeles-based hip hop collective Odd Future in 2010.
Ocean later said of his work at the time, "There was a point where I was composing for other people, and it might have been comfy to continue to do that and enjoy that income stream and the anonymity. But that's not why I moved away from school and away from family."
His friendship with Odd Future member Tyler, The Creator reinvigorated Ocean's songwriting. His debut mixtape, Nostalgia, Ultra, was released to critical acclaim in 2011; The singles "Novacane" and "Swim Good" both achieved chart success.
The Next Step
Rolling Stone magazine's Jonah Weiner wrote that Ocean was a "gifted avant-R&B smoothie". In April 2011, Ocean stated that his relationship with Def Jam strengthened since the release of the mixtape. The mixtape made Ocean widely known and led his collaborations with rappers Jay-Z and Kanye West.
Ocean first appeared in Tyler, The Creator's music video for the single "She".
In June 2011, Ocean revealed that he would be working on the upcoming Kanye West and Jay-Z collaborative album, Watch the Throne. Ocean co-wrote and featured on two tracks: "No Church in the Wild" and "Made in America".
Ocean sampled the music from The Eagles' song "Hotel California" on his song "American Wedding" from Nostalgia, Ultra.
When asked about it, Ocean stated that Eagles band member "Don Henley is apparently intimidated by my rendition of 'Hotel California'. He threatened to sue if I perform it again."
In response to Ocean's comments, The Eagles legal representative released a statement: "Frank Ocean did not merely 'sample' a portion of the Eagles' 'Hotel California,' he took the whole master track, plus the song's existing melody, and replaced the lyrics with his own. This is not creative, let alone 'intimidating.' It's illegal.
On July 28, 2011, a song titled "Thinkin Bout You", leaked on the internet, however he still released it officially to digital retailers on April 10, 2012.
In 2012, Ocean released his debut studio album Channel Orange to universal acclaim from critics, who announced it the best album of the year in the HMV's Poll of Polls. It also earned Ocean six Grammy Award nominations and was credited by some writers for moving the R&B genre in a different and more challenging direction. Considered as Ocean's first commercial release on a traditional record label, Channel Orange featured unconventional songs that were noted for their storytelling and social commentary, and a dense musical fusion that drew on hip hop, soul, and R&B. The songs about unrequited love in particular received the most attention, partly because of Ocean's announcement prior to the album's release, when he revealed that his first love was a man. The announcement made global headlines, and some critics compared its cultural impact to when David Bowie revealed that he was gay in 1972. Ocean promoted the album with his 2012 Summer Tour, which featured final appearances at the Coachella and Lollapalooza festivals
He told me I should see love
I said "I wish you could see the stars"
He said "no, but my faith could move those"
I said "have you ever seen the mountain?"
He said "I wish you could see hope"
I said "I wish you could see the ocean"
And described yellow so perfectly
And the same man with sunken eyes saw me
But what good is border to me yeah, yeah
He said war is for those who foresee it
Seen them fight and divide for it
And back then he saw the flags fly
Cause making music would be selfish
He once said he couldn't write songs
Who painted white lights on a canvas
A blind boy became a kind man
Eyes like I've never seen
With eyes like sky
Watching ohhh [x3]
And described yellow so perfectly
And the same boy with sunken eyes saw me
But the blue seems different since she's passed away
He leaves word to a blue home
Who rides a blue bus through a nightmare
A blind boy saw a blue man
And talks of saving the earth from itself
She meets up with a green club
She drives a green car through a dream world
A blind boy sees a green girl
The verse is about how a supposed “blind boy” sees other people in his world, with the blue man and Frank (yellow) meaning he can see the green girl again. This creates the theme of colors throughout the song and also alludes to the rules of primary colors.
The blind boy can also be seen as a symbol of innocence in a world which he cannot see properly, forgetting all aspects of physical appearance and just focusing on the people’s auras and presonality.
The color of green here represents hope but also something renewable or recyclable, instead of the usual representations of green like money or envy. The dream world might refer to a world where everything is beautiful and not bogged down with chemicals in the air or trash on the ground.
The colour blue represents depression and loneliness although this is contadicted by the way he rides a 'bus' which is a form of public transport and will therefore have other people on it.
Sunken eyes also means blind although he sees Frank as he is, just like he saw the green girl and the blue man which is a contradiction, alternatively it could mean that he sees them for who they are and all that they are as a person rather than their physical appearance.
In the blind boys eyes, Frank is yellow which brings the entire verse together. When the little boy sees the blue man and Frank, who is yellow, he also sees the green girl. Blue and yellow make green when mixing colors.
This could also infer that yellow, like blue and green also has a subliminal meaning. It symbolizes wisdom, joy and happiness. The blind boy ‘sees’ Frank as a shining light. The 'silver lining of the cloud'.
Even though, this boy is blind, somehow he seems to be able to these people’s true colors. The blind boy has a special gift of watching people/ knowing them personally, people believe only God has, which proves they are compared in this song. Alternatively it could mean that this boy is watching the green girl because of how beautiful she is and he can see her personality and knows she is beautiful because of the person she is: she is a beautiful person in his eyes.
some people who are blind have different colored eyes. Some would say the color of the sky. Also, it could be that because the little boy sees all of these things, he has “God’s eyes” which watch over everything/one from the sky over us. it could also be referring to the eye colour blue which is attractive to some people.
Here it is implied that some time has passed and the little blind boy has grown up into a nice guy; resilient to all of the world’s evil
This could mean one of two things:
-the kind man is a great artists who paints the truth, hence the “white lights” on the canvas. White usually means peace, truth and virtue
-the kind man is not an artist but he sees the world as it is through white lights, or his blind eyes.
alternatively it could have a deeper meaning because a canvas is traditionally white which means that people would not be able to see white ontop of which but it doesnt matter to him because he 'see's' things for what they are and not what they appear to be.
It would be selfish to make music because he would be making it for himself, due to the fact that he cannot see but he can hear; he could wish to make a film but he wouldn't be able to see it.
It could mean that war is only fought if the people involved want it to happen and have visualized it happening. 'Border' in the next line could be the divide between countries for example the states in america are not seporated by sea but there is an invisible border which the Frank thinks is useless; we should all be able to live along side each other without the need to cordon ourselves off
Seeing the ocean can be a spiritual and moving experience for many people and Frank wishes the blind man could see it, which implies that he is actually be blind. Also, the ocean is blue which ties in with overall color scheme.
Hope is something that is felt and cannot be seen, so if anyone can “see” it, it would be the blind man who wishes that Frank could see what he sees
Like the ocean, seeing a mountain can be a beautiful experience and mountains are a part of the Earth, which is green. Once again tying into the songs overall color scheme.
The kind man wishes that Frank had the same amount of faith that he has, which may have come from the fact that he cannot see meaning he has to have and keep faith. being blind has 'sobered' the blind man and he understands what really matters in life. .
When seeing the stars at night, it can invoke feelings of awe and wonder which Frank wishes the blind kind man could see. Also, it’s the final color in the song; yellow. Looking at stars is also stereotypically romantic so it could imply that frank wishes to share an intimate romantic moment with him.
Love is a subjective feeling that cannot really be seen, so the blind man would know what love is. It also is a beautiful emotion that can rival any of the other things that Frank wishes the blind man could see
The lyrics tell a story which leads us to believe that the video will be narrative based however this is not the case. the video is more symbolic showing a journey, amplifying the lyrics.
This is set in one place with Ocean the main focus of the whole thing, there is no narrative but it almost like he is telling his story through the lyrics.
Thinking 'Bout You
In this video the visuals contradict the lyrics, they have little relevance to what the video is showing however it is a narrative showing how the boys implied parents did to end up in hospital. Ocean is telling the story.
