David Fincher's
FIGHT CLUB
Emma Sayers
The Narrator
(Jack)
Tyler Durden
"All the ways you wish you could be, that's me. I look like you wanna look, I fuck like you wanna fuck, I am smart, capable, and most importantly, I am free in all the ways that you are not."
Marla Singer
"Marla's philosophy of life is that she might die at any moment. The tragedy, she said, was that she didn't."
"With insomnia, nothing's real. Everything's far away. Everything's a copy of a copy of a copy."
"I'm a thirty-year-old boy."
Masculinity
Fascism
Family
Consumerism
"We're a generation of men raised by women. I'm wondering if another woman is really the answer we need." - Tyler
The space monkey's use fight club to escape their families / work by finding new companions.
0:22: "David Fincher has claimed in interviews that there is at least one Starbucks cup visible in every scene."
The paper street house compared to Jack's flat shows the narrators' realisation that material goods don't equal happiness. he also stopped trying to achieve the american dream and just feel freedom.
Jack and Tyler's absent fathers could explain their behavior as Tyler asks his father "now what?" but doesn't get the guidance he needs and Jack's father abandons him to start a new franchise at age six.
Jack and Marla observe the chaos from a safe height and distance like fascist leaders.
"We buy things we don't need with money we don't have to impress people we don't like"
- Tyler
Project Mayhem strips the men of their identities and gives them a purpose. They believe they are doing the wrong thing for the right reasons. All the men of fight club are equals and by destroying the credit scores the whole country will become equals too.
"In death, a member of project mayhem has a name."
- The Mechanic
"Is that what a real man looks like?"
The underwear model looks like that for reasons of vanity, whereas Tyler has gained his physique through fighting.
Testicular cancer support group: the men have literally lost their manhood and Bob grew Bitch tits, but through fight club bob feels powerful and important again. What's more manly than bare knuckle fighting?
"Listen up, maggots. You are not special. You are not a beautiful or unique snowflake. You're the same decaying organic matter as everything else."
- Tyler
1999
Power animal symbolism:
Cute & cuddly,
part of a crowd,
flightless bird,
males look after eggs,
black & white (suits),
Harmless.
"There's something more than ludicrous about sitting in a theatre while Brad Pitt preaches at you about the emptiness of materialism."
- Giroux
He lives alone and works a low status job. He is an everyday nobody.
Binary opposite of jack: He runs his own company and is charismatic with women. His personality allows the narrator to do things he wouldn't otherwise have done i.e. fight his boss.
"She's a predator posing as a house pet."
She attempts suicide to get attention because she feels unloved and worthless but Tyler comes to her rescue and she latches onto him, even though Jack does not want her around.
Angel face:
jealousy.
"I felt like destroying something beautiful."
"Fight Club was the beginning, now it's moved out of the basement, it's called Project Mayhem"
"It's only after we've lost everything that we're free to do anything"
"Our fathers were our models for God. If our fathers bailed, what does that tell you about God?"
Quest for identity - 08:45
Ignore opening (01:52)
Robert Paulson
In his search for the perfect male figure he gained breasts. He was a body builder who took steroids which unltimately lead to him getting testicular cancer and having his balls removed. As a result his wife left him and his children don't speak to him.
Bob is feminised in the film because of his bitch tits and because he tried to follow the medias portrayal of the muscular man. In a film prodominately featuring men, he reminds me of Piggy from Lord of the Flies by William Goulding.
"His name is Robert Paulson..."
Costume designer: Michael Kaplan. Fincher also worked with him on Se7en, The Game and Panic Room.
"I am Jack's inflamed sense of rejection"

Neo Noir

Helpless male / Strong females
Downbeat / twist endings
Recurring narrative devices
