Titles for Jesus
Transcript of Titles for Jesus
A title is not a name.
A title, however, brings out certain attributes and characteristics of Jesus.
There are many titles that Jesus is given.
Each title has a meaning.
A partial list of his titles are given here in our presentation including the meanings.
Son of God
This title originally did not imply full divinity, but simply a person's special relationship with God.
The early church used this title to show that they believed Jesus had a very special relationship with God. This title shows that Jesus was divine as well as human.
Son of Man
As regards the title "Son of Man," it is significant that Jesus made frequent use of it when speaking of himself.
This title was later also used for a powerful heavenly figure.
This title appears in the Gospel of Mark. Jesus himself used it. I means that Jesus came inn human form to serve man. An old testament prophet, Daniel, had used this title when referring to the Messiah.
Back in the time of Jesus, the Jews thought the definition of a messiah was a political activist, a warrior coming to save them but to Jesus it did not mean the same thing. To Jesus a messiah was a suffering servant. We were assured that Jesus was going to suffer as he said this to his disciples.
