Northwest Ordinance of 1785 Northwest Ordinance of 1787 Homestead Act Who- Congress under the Articles of Confederation What
Where- Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, Ohio, and Wisconsin Why- to organize land so it was easier to settle Who? Why Who-
What When Where Why NORTHWEST ORDINANCE Western lands divided into six mile squares called townships
Townships were divided into 36 sections
Each section was 640 acres Congress To establish rules for becoming a state and for future settlement Where-
Wisconsin What- Further divided the Northwest territory into smaller territories
future states
ruled by territorial governor Rules
5,000 adult males= elect own legislature
60,000= apply to become a state List of rights that gave settlers the same rights as citizens No slavery MOVING WEST Settlers 1860-1910 To promote settlement of the west Gave 160 acres of public land to settlers
Must keep the land and farm it for 5 years
Land was given to the person after that time
Tripled the amount of farms in the United States
