WHAT IS A ZINE?
A zine ( /ˈziːn/ zeen; an abbreviation of fanzine, or magazine) is most commonly a small circulation publication of original or appropriated texts and images. More broadly, the term encompasses any self-published work of minority interest usually reproduced via photocopier. - Wikipedia

WHY DO 'THEY' CALL THEM ZINES?
Zine comes from fanzine, a term coined in the 1930s to describe a combination of "fan mags" and "letterzines."

One of the first fanzines was The Comet (1930), which was about science fiction.

ZINES & THE PRINTING PRESS
The world's first movable type printing technology was invented and developed in China by the Han Chinese printer Bi Sheng between the years 1041 and 1048.

In Korea, the movable metal type printing technique was invented in the early thirteenth century during the Goryeo Dynasty.

In the West, the invention of an improved movable type mechanical printing technology in Europe is credited to the German printer Johannes Gutenberg in 1450.

The printing press was an important step towards the democratization of knowledge.

- Wikipedia

A publication can still be considered a zine even if it wasn't explicitly labeled a zine by its creator(s), as long as it was independently made.
