Transcript of What is the thermite reaction?

Learning objectives
L5
: Describe the reactivity series

L6
: Describe with an equation what happens in the thermite reaction

L7
: Use the reactivity series to predict displacement reactions
What is a displacement reaction?
Keywords:
Reactivity, displacement, exothermic, oxide

Aluminium is more reactive than iron
It displaces iron from its compounds
Aluminium + iron oxide -> aluminium oxide + iron
The aluminum has displaced iron from its oxide compound
L5
: The Reactivity Series
Reactions between metals, water, air and acid can be used to put metals into a reactivity series
You will be set in teams of 3 or 4.
Using the clues and what you know about these metals you need to put them in order of reactivity.
Groups:

1) Emily O'C, Sarah, Josh, Daniel

2) Tate, Tim, Guy, Louie

3) Abi, Daisy, Jack K

4) Tom, Seth, Alissa, Ella

5) Sara, Lucy, Lucas, Curtis

6) Ethan, Emily C, Merle

7) Jimmy, Alex, Jack B, Milovan
1) Potassium, Sodium, Calcium, lithium
Clues:
reaction of potassium with water:
Burning sodium:
Reaction of lithium in water:
Reaction of calcium in water:
2) Zinc, magnesium, lead
Burning magnesium:
Zinc reaction in acid:
Lead fact: Lead was used to make pipes by the ancient romans, some historians argue that the slow reacton between the water and the lead caused disease and the fall of rome
3) Copper, gold, silver
Copper and oxygen reaction:
Gold in hydrochloric acid:
2500 year old silver
Correct Series in order of most reactive to least
1) Potassium, Sodium, Lithium, calcium

2) Magnesium, zinc, lead

3) Copper, Silver, Gold
Which is the odd one out?
Potassium
Sodium
Lithium
Copper
Can you work out the name of the compound?
um
True/False
Zinc is more reactive than lead
Write down the word equation for the thermite reaction
Complete the symbol equation:
iron + copper oxide -> iron oxide + copper
2Fe(s) + 3CuO(s) ->
Lithium
Odd one out
Gold
Copper
Silver
What is the most reactive metal?
What is the least reactive metal?
This reaction is called the thermite reaction
Prepare to write a description of the thermite reaction
Lv.6
Write a description of the thermite reaction
Keywords: Displaces, aluminium, iron, aluminium oxide, iron oxide, exothermic
NIT
is used for coating cans because it is less reactive than iron

LIVERS
is a metal used for jewellery because it is unreactive. It slowly goes black in air

ATOMS IS UP
is a metal which is more reactive than sodium

DEAL
is a metal that is used for roofing because it does not react with air and water

LOGD
is used in jewellery because it stays shiny

POPER C
is an un-reactive metal that is preferred by the police

Precious metal found mixed up in
A PLUM TIN
