Wilma Rudolph started school at age 8 because she was poor. She was born with polio and pneumonia. Wilma's father was a porter and her mother was a maid. When she was born she was only 4.5 pounds, the doctor doubted that she would survive. Wilma died from brain cancer. Wilma got pregnant.

Bethany Hamilton was born in a family of surfers. She entered her first surf competition at age 8 and won the short and long-board divisions. Bethany had her arm bitten off at age 13 on October 31, 2003 by a 14-foot tiger shark. Bethany started surfing again 1 month after the attack. As soon as she started again, she placed 5th in the Open Women's division and first in the Explorer Women's division
