What do I need to know?
"If you can see it, read it,
watch it, or hear it -- with
or without a machine--
the work is probably
copyrighted" (Simpson 2).
Since 1978, a work no longer needs the copyright symbol or notice to be copyrighted.

What do I do as a student?
1) I assume
the amount of an original work that I use
3) I accurately
credit the source by citing
in an appropriate format
4) I credit everything not completely original to me
10 Percent Rule
Motion Pictures, 10 percent or 3 minutes
Text, 10 percent or 1000 words
Music, 10 percent or 30 seconds
Photos or Illustrations , 10 percent, not
more than five per artist
Poems, entire poem, if less than 250 words,
but 3 excerpts per anthology
Databases, 10 percent or 2500 fields or cell entries
The rule is to use whichever
of the above is LESS!

is increasingly important,
Unpleasant, sometimes disastrous consequences...
