Transcript of Ions and molecules

Ions and Molecules Recap from last lesson:
Atoms are made up of protons, electrons and neutrons.

Protons are positively charged
Electrons are negatively charged
Neutrons do not have a charge.

Protons determine the type of element

In electrically neutral atom

Number of Protons = Number of electrons Let's make a human atom!

Proton = 1 Neutron = 0 Electron = 1
Proton = 2 Neutron = 2 Electron = 2
Proton = 6 Neutron = 6 Electron = 2
Proton = 11 Neutron = 11 Electron =11
Lesson objective:
What is an Ion?
What is a molecule? Let's make a human Lithium Element

Remove 1 electron

You have a Lithium Ion! Electrons are negatively charged.
So what is the charge of this sodium ion? SODIUM ION HAS ONE POSTIVE CHARGE!

Na Let's make a human Sodium Element

Remove 1 electron

You have a Sodium Ion! Let's make a human Aluminium ion

Remove 3 electron

You have an Aluminium ion! What is the charge of the ion? + + Li Al 3+ Let's make a human Fluorine ion

Add 1 electron

You have an Fluorine ion! F - A Molecule is made up of 2 or more atoms of the same type or different types that are combined together.
