Vincent Van Gogh
Transcript of Vincent Van Gogh
Formal: Vincent Van Gogh painted this while he was in an asylum at Saint-Remg. It was painted from memory. It is the second in a trilogy.
Contextual: Remembering what the outside night life used to look like. Wishing to somehow be on the outside instead of inside the asylum.
Expressive: Large brush strokes adding more depth and rich texture to the artwork.
Formal: It was the first work of a trilogy. It has similar style and compositional structure of Avenue De Clichy in the Evening by Arquentin.
Contextual: Van Gogh wanting to see a cafe light up in the night sky. It was done with no black at all in the picture. He only used dark blue, violet, greens and yellow. This piece brought him great joy.
Expressive: He used dark blues and light blues to create the night sky. All lines of composition all go where the horse and carriage are.
“What would life be if we had no courage to attempt anything?”
Van Gogh was born March 30, 1853 in Zundert, Netherlands.
He began to draw as a small child.
In his late twenties he became an artist with paint.
Van Gogh suffered much turmoil in his life.
Never found love, or when he did it was just
Suffered painful anxiety, mental illeness, drinking,
smoking, depression and loneliness.
Moved to Paris and began painting in full color.
Very much a people pleaser, wanted acceptance from his peers.
There he met Constantijn C. Huysmans who helped him develop a distinct style.
Van Gogh is considered to be a post- impressionist painter of the Dutch origin.
This means that he reacted against the naturalism of the impressionists to explore color, line, form and the emotional response of the development of expression.
Van Gogh created over 2,100 pieces of art in a ten year span.
He used medias such as oils, pencil, paint, watercolor and printmaking.
Was a drawer, sketcher and painter that is notable for rough beauty, emotional honesty and bold color.
Supposedly died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, although
the gun was never found on July 29, 1890.
