Use your narrative space

How to make better use of stories in organisations by collecting, connecting and sharing »
Peter Fruhmann

In ancient Rome
the emperor Hadrian was presiding a meeting of the court. A common woman was trying to defend herself against a charge for a fellony she had not committed. But no one - including Hadrian - seemed to take her pleadings seriously.
Instead, all members of the court chatted with each other, paying little attention, until the woman shouted desperately at the emperor:
"If you have no time to LISTEN
you have no time to RULE!"
and CREATE a compelling story
in sync with your organisation.

Hadrian was impressed and ashamed and ready to LISTEN.
He never forgot this episode.

Needless to say that he is remembered as one of the five 'good' emperors
of Rome.
The Narrative Space of the organisation
Organizations are not natural storytelling environments.
Remember:
Organizations are richer than we think.
Next to corporate stories (the ‘managed’ stories) the 'unmanaged' stories can develop.
They can differ completely from the ‘official’ story:
stories of pride, hypocrisy, love, hate, hope, fear, bitterness, camaraderie or outright mutual admiration.
They include folkloristic qualities as ceremonies, rituals, legends and heroes.
They include the MEANING people give to their working life, their PERSONAL EXPERIENCE of culture
and identity.

One last quote:
Where there's a story,
there is action!
Are you really interested in what makes the people in your organization tick?
Empathizing is an avant-garde form of travel in which you step into the shoes of another person
SO...
Don't ASSUME what people aspire. Listen to what they really want.
It's in their stories.

If you LISTEN you will connect.
An organization is filled with all kinds of people who are busy with discovering interpreting and telling all kinds of stories
There's no connection!
We know where that
will lead to
ANALYZE & UNDERSTAND

You can only change what you understand.

What you don't understand, you repress.

So you don't change.
It pays to LISTEN to them.
It pays to COLLECT them!
Fact:
When one person tells a story
and the other actively listens,
their brains (brain patterns) actually
begin to
SYNCHRONIZE.

Hello
Before you start thinking about telling a story
to your organisation, please consider this:
...what do you know about the UNMANAGED stories?
What do you think is YOUR story?
1. LISTEN / COLLECT
2. ANALYZE
4. TELL / CONNECT
Four steps
to get there
People are too busy with operations and manipulations of materials, information and other people. It's the domain of the MANAGED stories.

BUT...
In terms of communication (and stories) your organisation might sometimes look and feel like this:
Are you sure it is the RIGHT story?
3. SYNCHRONIZE / CREATE
Roughly, these are the building blocks of your organisation
All of them living beings, busy with their past, their present and their future
With all the stories attached
So, there's a lot going on in three dimensions. You could call it
1. LISTEN / COLLECT
A story
This is a snapshot of what could be happening right now in your organisation
Take a good look...
Now imagine this...
We advise you to watch this Prezi in full screen
2. ANALYZE...
The Future
...these stories which are connected to
The Present
The Past
When you understand, you change.

When you understand, 'it' changes.
3. SYNCHRONIZE / CREATE
SYNCHRONIZE!
Did you know that

we can remember stories better
(up to 22 times)
than a collection of disconnected facts (bullets, presentations)
Now is the time to (re)tell your story
4. TELL / CONNECT
Listen & COLLECT

Analyze

Synchronize & CREATE

Tell & CONNECT
In short once more
Now let's become concrete:
The shortest distance between two (or more) people
is a story.
Storytelling inspires to focus attention, paints vision and by that creates engagement.
Your story can become 'our story'

Synchronizing with the other involves EMPATHY.
