I meet Catherine Opie at her New York show "girlfriend" "Exploring lesbian identity, Catherine Opie delves into her archive of unprinted black-and-white images of girlfriends to uncover portraits that complement her recent color photographs of butch-dykes, both famous and unknown. Shot from the heart, Opie’s powerful images include Madonna and Angelina Jolie’s ex-girlfriend Jenny Shimizu in black leather boots on a white bed..." ref: http://flavorwire.com/79697/photo-gallery-catherine-opies-girlfriends/ I like this quote from an Interview with Jenny Shimizu "When my UCLA students ask me if art can really create true political change, I say, “Well, I don’t think it can create change, but representation creates change." ref: http://www.openingceremony.us/entry.asp?pid=1082 Graphic Memoir/Novel.. This is a autobiographical "tragicomic" chronicling her childhood and the years before and after her father's death. bio "Known for paintings drawn from Chinese historical photography, Hung Liu’s works focus on what she calls the “mythic poses” that underlay the photographic surfaces of history. Representing such elemental human activities as laboring, eating, journeying, leaping, fighting, dreaming, and carrying one’s burden, these “mythic poses” come from particular historical circumstances, but seem epic, trans-historical, and allegorical in the her paintings. With an overlay of traditional Chinese birds, flowers, insects, dragons, and – most recently – stylized human figures, Liu offers her subjects artistic evidence of their own rich heritage – as if to remind or comfort them." ref: http://www.kelliu.com I love Jerry Uelsmann's work. Period, and seen some of his & his wife Maggie work in are past SF trip at the 49 Geary St. Mondernbook. "Using multiple negatives to produce his surreal, dreamlike photographs, Jerry Uelsmann has developed a singular artistic vision which has carried him through a nearly 50 year artistic career. Firmly entrenched in his traditional darkroom practices, Uelsmann continues to produce magical and thought-provoking imagery without the help of modern computer-base techniques. Uelsmann says, “There’s an element of alchemy that I sense in the darkroom that I would never ever sense in front of a computer. There’s a technological well that is behind the screen that is beyond any comprehension for me. It’s not particularly mystical – it’s just technical. In the darkroom it feels much more spiritual.” Uelsmann’s works are featured in the permanent collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the International Museum of Photography at the George Eastman House, the Victoria an Albert Museum in London, the Bibliotheque National in Paris, the National Museum of Modern Art in Tokyo, and the Moderna Museet in Stockholm, among many others." ref: http://www.modernbook.com/jerryuelsmann.htm Other artist.. APIQWTC, Asian queer community I could be apart after humboldt.. "While this period saw a boom in new releases of both TV series and feature-length anime films in Japan, it wasn't until a decade later that U.S. cable and satellite began to pick them up. Today, anime fans the world over are familiar with titles such as: Urusei Yatsura -- (popular translation is Those Annoying Aliens, though we have heard it described more floridly by a Japanese animator as "Those Noisy People from Outer Space Whom You Wouldn't Want Living Next Door"); Lensman; Project A-Ko; Megazone 23; Ranma; Area 88; Dirty Pair; Bubblegum Crisis; Akira; and Maison Ikkoku, to name just a handful. Japanese anime is also readily available on laser-disc or video." .. ref: http://www.netcomuk.co.uk/~mdownes/anime.html "Transsexuality is often used in manga for laughs or escapism, but Wandering Son is one of the few manga I've read that takes its subject matter seriously. Shimura Takako is known for drawing LGBT-friendly manga, and... in Wandering Son she sympathetically and subtly depicts two young people who are transsexuals, or at least have transsexual leanings.... It's a tasteful psychological portrait, with a lot of unexpected little meanders and detours... and a pleasant lack of either over-the-top tortured drama or polemic speeches about the subject matter. Just wandering along the road of adolescence, watching our heroes discover themselves, is fascinating enough. Recommended." – Jason Thompson, Otaku USA figure modeling figure drawing clothed figure drawing still life storyboarding perspective digital imaging
