Macbeth FOR EACH SCENE: Which characters are in the scene? Which characters are new and which are recurring? Who has the most lines? The least? For at least one character, describe In what ways besides speech he/she is characterized (actions/interactions/clothing/ descriptions/setting/other)? Quote one statement by a significant character that seems most illustrative of him/her. 1. Characters 2. Setting 3. Imagery/Symbolism 4. Plot 5. Language/Music Where does each scene occur? Place? Inside/outside? Natural/man-made? Cluttered/ spare? Attributes/descriptions of place? Scene Observations CONCEPTUAL EFFECTS: For each scene, find 1) word choices that seem surprising or especially suggestive of meaning/tone/feeling (diction). Explain. 2) figurative language employed. Quote it, state who says it and with regard to what, and explore significance (http://www.frostfriends.org/figurative.html). 3) a pattern to the CONTENT of at least one character's speech. Describe it. WHAT does that character say? MUSICAL EFFECTS: For each scene, find 1) any exceptions to iambic pentameter. 2) any rhyme (end or internal), or disruptions in rhyme. 3) any sound techniques employed? (alliteration/ assonance/consonance/dissonance/etc.) Time? When does each scene occur? Time of day? Of year? Amount of time covered in the course of the scene? Day time or night time? Attributes/descriptions of time? Context? What happens immediately before and after each scene (paying special attention to juxtaposition of settings)? Does the setting change within the scene? Act Analysis: Consider the overall mood created by the various aspects of setting. Then . . . Argue for a change of setting (time, place, and/or conditions) in one of the scenes. Why would you stage the scene differently? And how would you stage it in order to exploit the impact of setting (consider location/lighting/set design/ colors/sound and special effects/etc.)? Scene Observations Act Analysis WHEN FINISHED WITH THE ACT: Focus on three characters. Using quotes and analysis, show how the characters are consistent (static) or changing (dynamic). Which character changes most? How? Which changes least? Why? Scene Observations Where? Act Analysis Select two short passages from within the act that contrast with regard to language/music. Copy them on a page (one next to or immediately above/below the other). Indicate the contrasting elements. What meaning is created by the opposition? Analyze what it suggests about the character(s), the plot development, the mood/tone, etc. Scene Observations Act Analysis What happens in each scene (brief summary)? What happens that is NOT "traffic of [the] stage" (what happens offstage)? When is ordering of the action surprising? How is plot presented such that we (the audience) know things characters do not (dramatic irony)? To what extent does this act fit with Freytag's conception of dramatic structure? Discuss. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dramatic_structure) Imagine an additional scene for this act. Where would it occur? Give a brief synopsis of that scene, and explain why it is worthy of inclusion. Scene Observations Act Analysis For each scene, what is the most striking and/or seemingly symbolic image (i.e., blood, mothering, animals, weaponry, etc.)? Briefly discuss. How do key images change from scene to scene? Which images increase in frequency from scene to scene? Which decrease? Choose a key image and render it visually (consider: color; contour; shading; composition/space; abstract or concrete; sharp or soft focus; etc.). Include a quotation. In two short paragraphs: 1) explore the significance of the image (when does it appear? how does Shakespeare present it? what tone/mood does it help convey? etc.); 2) explore the presentation of your image (why did you render it the way you did?).
