Why teach people how to fundraise? How is fundraising different from marketing? What is fundraising? Who can help you fundraise? How do you start? Ask them what they like to do. Ask them about their economic background. Ask them which development task they would feel comfortable doing, which would make them uncomfortable. Ask them where they want to grow. Create a list of tasks you need help with. Volunteers from Volunteermatch.org Interns from your local college Recent graduates Unemployed people looking to broaden their skills Board members Staff members Fundraising is the act of building relationships. Fundraising is different from marketing because the function of marketing is to make the worse appear better, while fundraising is the act of building relationships and awareness about your nonprofit. Because too few people know how to do it. Because you need help and you don't have enough time. Because if everyone in your nonprofit is also a fundraiser, your nonprofit has a very good chance of success. Can they stuff envelopes? Research grants? Help interview staff? Write grants? Help coordinate volunteers? Help with event logistics? Do graphic design? Take photos of programs? Make thank you phonecalls? Connect you with major donors? Connect you with corporations? Table at a festival with you? Do research for a brochure? Redesign your website? Help you create online communities? How can you make it worth their while? Give them encouragement Take an interest in who they are. Ask them about their hobbies. Give them a linkedin recommendation. Help them make an RSS feed for jobs if they're looking. Look over their resume and cover letter for them. Be understanding with their schedules Call and check up on them if they miss a shift. Show them you want them to do tasks that are interesting for them. Tell them you want to help them succeed. Give them a little award, bring in cookies, or have an appreciation luncheon.
