Transcript of Mythology...so what?! Why is mythology important to American culture?

Amelia Pittman. Mythology... so what?! Why is it important to American culture? Does mythology matter or not? I think so. Regardless of if the stories of mythology are real, I do think that they affect us and our culture. People that may not believe in or have a religion may use the stories of mythology for guidance in their life. Seeing the fact that every story in mythology has a theme, you could learn something valuable from each one. Mythology also influences our culture through theater and the arts, our language and logos and advertising. Oedipus. Oedipus is abandoned after his father(King Laius) hears a prophecy that he is to kill his father and marry his mother(Queen Jocasta). Oedipus is adopted and later hears that same prophecy, and goes in search for the truth. Along the way he gets in a fight with a man and kills him, unknowingly his father. He then solves a riddle from the Sphinx which has been terrorizing a kingdom, and in return, the kingdom gives him their queen's hand in marriage, who is his biological mother. King Midas and the "Midas Touch". King Midas is about a king who is granted the power to turn everything he touches into gold he soon realizes how foolish this is, he cannot eat or drink because everything he touches turns to gold. One day his daughter comes running to him and he hugs her, she also becomes gold ,breaking his heart, he realizes how foolish his decision was.

In American culture Midas is a company that repairs cars and supplies parts. The Midas touch today means success in everything that you do and making it sparkle. Similar to the story of King Midas, he just went too far and got greedy. Cupid and Psyche and The Beauty and the Beast. Psyche was really pretty and Aphrodite was jealous because of that. she sent her son, Cupid, to have her fall in love with someone ugly.Cupid he had her father leave her on a mountain and then they got married. But she couldn't look at him. Psyche thinks her husband is a monster and that's why he won't show himself.
Psyche sees him and falls in love, but has betrayed his trust.Aphrodite punishes Psyche for looking at him with crazy chores. Her last and most difficult task is to go to the underworld and bring back a box of persephones beauty.Psyche goes through many hardships in the underworld and is told not to open the box,she does anyway. The box is filled with a noxious air and knocks her unconscious, Cupid has forgiven her and swoops down to blow the fumes away, rescuing her from the underworld.Aphrodite and Cupid forgive her and she becomes a goddess. Prometheus. Prometheus took the secret of fire from the gods and gave it to humans. Zeus had him stuck up on a rock and some kind of bird or creature ate his lever everyday and it would grow back and be eaten again. Pandora and Eve. the gods put all of the evil in the world in a box (the gods put all of the evil in the world in a box (which was actually a jar) and told her NOT to open it. Her curiosity got the better of her and she did open it, releasing all the evil in the world. But then she opened it a second time releasing hope into the world as well Beauty and The Beast: The moral of both stories are the same, Beauty marries Beast because of the of his character, despite his appearance. Cupid asks Psyche not to look at him because he wants their marriage to be about love alone, not his good looks. Pandora's Box and Eve. The gods put all of the evil in the world in a box and tell her not to open it. Her curiosity got the best of her and she opened it, releasing all the evil in the world.
Similarities:
Eve: First woman, created by Yahweh.
Pandora: First woman, created by the Greek gods.
Eve: Ate an apple God had told her not to eat.
Pandora: Opened a box the gods had told her not to open.
Because of Adam and Eve, we got knowledge, and evil was let into the world. Pandora's box actually contained evil, such as diseases and the likes. And when she opened it, it was let out. Medea. Medea is the daughter of the king of Cholcis who helps Jason in his quest for the Golden Fleece. She uses magic to help him get the fleece, and after the quest, she returns with him to Greece. Upon their return though, Jason betrays Medea and agrees to marry a princess. Furious, Medea exacts her revenge, sending a poisoned crown to the princess, which kills her and her father, and killing her and Jason's two sons.

Moral: Revenge, Medea is so hurt and angry by the fact Jason has cheated on her and kills the children, sadly. Medea is seen as a venerable, strong, crazy women similar to Tyler Perry's character(Madea). Medea. Icarus Icarus' dad,Daedalus, tells Icarus not to fly to close to the sun or else the glue that kept the feathers together will melt and the feathers will fall out and not to fly to low or he will drown in the sea. So Icarus sets off. He goes and flies up to the sun. He flies away from the father's view, and soon the father begins to worry where Icarus has gone off to. Shortly after, a body falls out of the sky.

American Culture: Red Bull, the energy drink slogan is "Red Bull it gives you wings" maybe the creator got the slogan from Greek story of Icarus, that he could "fly". Ali Baba. Ali Baba, a poor woodcutter finds a cave full of gold, hidden there by thieves. He tells his brother who goes to look but gets caught in the caves by the thieves. The brother tells the leader that Ali Baba has been taking the gold from the cave. The leader plans to kill Ali Baba and his brother and the 40 thieves go to Ali Baba's house where they hide in big oil jars in Ali Baba's garden. Clever Morgiana knew who the oil seller really was and poured boiling oil into the jars killing the other thieves. While dancing in front of the leader of the thieves Morgiana stabbed him. Ali Baba was saved and lived happily ever after.

Theme: Greed has awful consequences. Isis,Seth,Osiris. Osiris was a great ruler of Egypt. Along with his wife, Isis, Osiris ruled the country wisely, and was well liked by his subjects. Osiris's brother, Seth, was jealous of his popularity, and plotted Osiris's murder. One day, Seth got the measurements for Osiris's casket. Seth then had a beautiful casket made, and threw a large feast for which Osiris and numerous others were invited. At this feast, Seth produced the casket, and announced that whoever could fit inside it could keep it. Many guests attempted to fit inside the casket, but failed. Osiris then attempted the challenge. Once Osiris was in the casket, Seth closed the lid on the casket and sealed it. He had the casket thrown into the Nile. When Isis heard of his death, she searched throughout Egypt and around the world for Osiris's casket. After years of searching, Isis found the casket. Isis brought the casket back to Egypt for an appropriate burial. Isis hid the casket in some bushes of the Nile for safekeeping before the burial. Seth found the casket in thebushes while he was hunting. Infuriated, Seth hacked Osiris's body into bits and scattered them throughout Egypt. Isis then had to start another search throughout Egypt to find all of Osiris's parts. Eventually, Isis found all parts of Osiris except for one. She then put Osiris's body back together with bandages. After years of searching, Isis found the casket. Isis brought the casket back to Egypt for an appropriate burial.
