New Economy, New Wealth

We are entering a post-industrial age with a very different economy and needs for a different view of wealth. What does this mean for us? (Original prezi by Arthur Brock) »

First, let's talk about
On the other hand, given the state of affairs in world,
maybe we don't know as much as we thought.
In fact, maybe we've forgotten
something very important.
These are all Industrial Age economic models,
and we are no longer in an Industrial Age.
Something Like :
Economics
Wow !
We've forgotten the larger picture...
...of the process of evolution we're within.

New Economy,
        New Wealth
The current economy is ending.
And that's actually good news.

Hunter-Gatherers
People operating as part of nature: following seasonal rhythms of food
they can collect or prey they can kill
Tribes & Clans

We sure know a lot

Economic Evolution
Oh, by the way...
YOU ARE HERE
Example: The printing press was a quantum leap in productive capacity in much the same way that organizing labor created a quantum leap at the prior level
Banking & Industry
Governments & Corporations
Progress in science and manufacturing coupled with
interest-based money generated explosive growth
of population, technology and resource consumption.
First electricity, then instantaneous communication,
then computers, software, the Internet...
These created the next quantum leap in productive capacity.
Self-Regulating Markets & Scalar Gift Economies
Capitalism, Communism, Socialism
Monarchies, Feudalism, Empire
Economy of Nature, Family & Tribe
This presentation isn't about economics.
It's about New Wealth
Intelligent Organizations &
Self-Regulating Social Organisms
As change accelerates, adaptive organizations thrive more
than their industrial-age command-control counterparts.

Centrally-controlled currencies, commercial markets and heirarchal organizations (such as corporations & governments) approach extinction as more efficient distributed currencies, gift economies and self-organizing networks replace them.
Peered Networks & Open Knowledge
Remember all those
 economic models?
What do they have in common?
Focused on Scarce Resources
Currency = Medium of Exchange
Wealth = Accumulation
Quality of Life Measures
Triple-Bottom-Line Accounting
Gross National Happiness
Others have noticed and began
creating new ways to understand WEALTH:
Let's consider these...
How do you experience wealth?
feeling of security
friendship
& community
deep connections
& conversations
able to give
leisure time
freedom
travel
beautiful surroundings
Craigslist
family & fun

So let's get back on track...

Natural Economies
(of HUMAN history)
500 Years
Industrial Economies
Information Economies

10,000 Years
Agricultural Economies
VERY NARROW CONTEXT
The debates about our economy
are in a VERY NARROW CONTEXT.
In case you're wondering if you'll see this in your lifetime...
You might still be here for the NEXT LEAP after this one! *
* Today's economy is not a recession. It's the end of an era.
Have you noticed that more MONEY
          doesn't make you more happy?
Accumulation is NOT
       the same as Wealth
( exactly as Cancer is not the same as health)
Information Age assets don't follow
      industrial age scarcity principles.
They GROW in value when shared
If Info Age economies
   don't revolve around scarcity,
then we need new models.
Money combines multiple functions
Medium of Exchange
Store of Value
Unit of Account
Token of Status / Reputation
A Metric or Measure
These functions are separable,
    and configurable in different ways
to make different types of currencies
College Degree = Token of Status
College Credit = Unit of Account
      Course Grade = Performance Metric
Example:
Scarcity
Sufficiency
Vitality
Identity &
Connectivity
Compre-
hensibility

What does Wealth
     really mean Now?
Industrial Economies
Information Economies
Expressive Capacities
Time-Scales
Spiral Dynamics

Natural
Building protocols and platforms to
   "open source" the next economy

Are you ready for the shift?
The ONLY level of systems wealth where
is even possible
...but...
What does Wealth
     really mean Now?
Each level functions with
    VERY DIFFERENT currencies
Dollars won't take us where we need to go,
so it's time to be building new ones.
(three non-monetary currencies designed to work together)
