So, we are not using the methodology we inherit from the business and statistical world, which is to look at the instant of the smoke-pattern as a past-occurance, as an instance to look back in time. Rather, we are looking at this image as an idomatic standing wave of future potentials. As such, we are not predicting what is to occur, but rather aligning ourselves in our concurrent social complexity. Culture change, transformative culture shift, occurs when there is vertical alignment in complexity at the same moment in time.

This still image shows smoke rising from an incense stick. It is clearly a moment in time, and yet it somehow captures something of the dynamic we perceive. Consider the cause and effect, the source that is the red ember of the incense and the smoke that issues from it. In the image, which particle of smoke is the oldest? 
It is a common illusion to think that what we are looking at is the trajectory of the smoke. We imagine that the particles at the top and left have followed the path we can see here, all they way back to the source. However, as we know when we look at the real thing, the little knot here is itself in process, and bears no linear, traceable relationship to the smoke partical off to the right. This is why we are mesmerised by it. This is why we must be careful when looking at images of dynamic states. 
Consider an echo. When we make the original sound-source, the echo is ahead of us in time, rather than behind us. The effect is ahead of us, in the future. And when we hear the echo, the source is behind us in time, in history. Similarly, at the moment when the incense burns, the paths the particles of ash trace are in the future. And if we are to consider a single particle of soot at the end of the trail, its path has a traceable history. Has this image correctly captured the path of this soot particle?

When we consider a phase-space of psycho-social dynamics, with time as one of the dimensions, we must be careful that we are reflecting on a flux of potentials. The further we go in time from our individual intentions and actions, the more unpredictable the specific influences. No matter how much we look at the spiral of smoke, we will never be able to correctly predict the trajectory of a particular particle of ash.
