New Media in Composition Hypertextual Appropriation Juxtaposition Imagery Status Cloud Identity Reflection Students will have started a Facebook account and updated their status at least 5 times a week for 8-10 weeks before this assignment. Using the Status Cloud application at http://apps.facebook.com/statustagcloud/ students will produce a word cloud from their status updates. In the most traditional of essay styles, they will then reflect on what the word cloud could mean about them. They will also need to incorporate some of the sources we have read in class to support what they say. 4-6 pages. Group Activity Plan Each student will plan, coordinate, and invite participants to an online or “real-life” activity (live chat, photo walk, party, fund raiser, service activity) based entirely on Facebook. The group will need to include at least two other members of the class, but is not limited to the number of people in that participate. They will report in an online discussion how the activity went. Twitter Trends Students will need to choose an emotionally charged word such as “black,” “poor,” “feminist,” homosexual,” “atheist,” and search once a week how this word is being used by Twitter users. They will always search for the same word, and compile the tweets into a corpus by copying and pasting the tweets they read into a Google Document. Around week six they will analyze what they have learned into a six to ten minute Prezi presentation. Visual Arguments The students will need to create a Flickr account and create a digital image or photo each week that makes a visual argument. There will be a class group on Flickr that they will need to add the photos to. Blog Synthesis Students will create a Google account if they don’t have one, and add RSS feeds of seven to ten blogs on subject they choose to Google Reader. They will have to keep up to date with all of the blogs they choose. They will also need to create a blog through Blogger, Wordpress, or other Web 2.0 program and post weekly synthesizing what they have learned about their chosen subject through reading the blogs on their Google Reader account. Students will also need to add RSS feeds of all their classmates’ blogs to their Reader and make regular comments on each others’ entries. Wiki Communal Paper The students will collectively write a paper on the influence of new media through a wiki. They will be responsible for checking the reliability of sources, they will decide the topic and thesis of the paper, they will format and proof read the paper, all together at the same time. On an online discussion board, students will post a reflection on their experience and reply to the posts of other students. Objectives Course The purpose of this course is to use the types of writing students participate in more often to learn and explore what makes "good writing" across genres, media and formats. At the end of this course, the students should be able to -feel comfortable expressing themselves in multimodal new media -understand basic principles of argument that transcend boundaries of written and visual media -feel comfortable using Web 2.0 applications in their daily interactions with others Capstone Project Students will produce a work of considerable depth and length combining research and writing in the field of new media composition along with reflections on class activities and assignments. Students will be free to decide the format of this final project. Formal proposal will be submitted and approved by teacher. Assignments Expectations -Students in this class will regularly participate in class activity and discussions. The experience is what this class is all about. -Students will bring their own knowledge and personal experiences with Web 2.0 applications and their classmates how to use and get the most out of these applications. -Students will produce 3000 level quality work teach This iseomthing new.
