R U ZN? HyperTh!nk!ng REVISITED: What it means in 2011 Tell me what YOU think Meaning of Hyperth!nking – what is a Hyperth!nker? What is the connection between the Hyperth!nker and ZN? Are you a HyperTh!nker? Why? Back in the olden days… ZN as a changing company Need for new attitude and new values to share with our clients A nice word that seems to mean something The context is what made it necessary… May you live in interesting times "In the future globalization is going to be increasingly driven by the individuals who understand the flat world, adapt themselves quickly to the processes and technologies." And the word became flesh… Then we defined the ZN vision THE leading emarketing agency for international HQs That means the team will need to be relentlessly innovative and deliver quality thinking and execution How can we do this? It boils down to the attitude and skills And we plan to use HyperThinking to get there The HyperThinker: our mental DNA HyperSHIFT MetaTHINK HyperACT HyperLINK Attitude Execution Spirit It starts with VALUES “Hire/Promote those with… Sunny dispositions. Fire those…. With perpetually Gloomy Dispositions.” Tom Peters Values and foundations TRUST Openness Transparency Integrity A different personality Attitude Spirit Execution ATTITUDE Positive Proactive Passionate Present Positive: embrace every challenge as if you really wanted to Proactive: you are in charge of your life Make suggestions, lead the project, lead the client, lead the team – don’t just wait, make things happen (in your work and life) – but NEVER complain simply change Passion: If you don’t love it – leave it Presence: Zen Read this! Richard Farson & Ralph Keyes: "Whoever Makes the Most Mistakes Wins: The Paradox of Innovation" EXECUTION Thriving on chaos Permanent white waters Focus on excellent execution On-time, on-budget “We have a 'strategic plan.' It’s called doing things.” Herb Kelleher “The most successful people are those who are good at plan B.”James Yorke, mathematician, on Chaos Theory in The New Scientist Four dimensions of HyperTh!nking 1. HyperSHIFT Existing in more than 3 dimensions 2. MetaTHINK Above, beyond 3. HyperLINK Linked or arranged non-sequentially 4. HyperACTIVE Emotionally stimulated, overexcited A paradigm shift can happen in a minute 1 The Zeitgeist of 2009: Black Swans! What does this really mean? Learn to understand your paradigms: we all need to live with them – a key to survival Learn to see when they are holding you back – things that you think are too difficult, impossible Don’t be defined by your paradigm/don’t be emotionally attached to it – that is the only way to shift Learn to be WRONG and proud – TMME and others Deliberately shift your paradigmTest it until it works! "I think it is very important for you to do two things: act on your temporary conviction as if it was a real conviction; and when you realize that you are wrong, correct course very quickly.” Andy Grove Impossible thinking as a methodology Back to school 2 We need to deliver added value thinking! That means coming up with more smart ideas than our clients and faster That means collaborating with our team so that we can do this Creative execution comes from culture, synergies of the team and individual contributions It’s not about sitting around the table and ‘brainstorming’ it’s about constant investigation and testing of smart new ideas Insight The mind is a muscle – it needs to be streched You need to exercise to keep it fit You need to practice different ways of thinking to be able to face different situations The Toolkit for the HyperThinker Daily Mental Gymnastics Read, Practice, Teach, Preach Thinking hats – De Bono Brainstorming/Collaborative Thinking It’s all about Web 2.0 3 Hyperlink New word, real opportunity Really changes everything All about personal innovation and attitude Web 2.0 Meme Map Let’s look at the slide that started it all… Flickr, del.icio.us: Tagging, not taxonomy Gmail, Google MapsAnd AJAX: RichUser Experiences PageRank, eBay reputation, Amazon reviews: user as contributor Blogs: Participation, not publishing Trust your users Small Pieces Loosely Joined (web as components) Google AdSense: Customer self-service enabling the long tail Wikipedia: Radical Trust BitTorrent: Radical Decentralization Rich User Experience Granular Addressability of content Play Emergent: User Behavior not Predetermined Software that gets better the more people use it The Right to Remix: “Some rights reserved” The perpetual beta The Long Tail Data as the “Intel Inside” Hackability “An attitude, not a technology” WEB 2.0 Operating in a constantly changing environment It’s happening every day Minor technological innnovation with big impact It’s about exploring, finding and testing Look out at the web: it’s really changing IABC ning, blogs, twitter, youtube and more Blogs and everyoneRSS and blog monitoring (netvibes) Google Earth and Dole We are REALLY seeing radical change around us Let’s be the one to discover it first and share it with our clients The tension 4 HyperTh!nk Hyper@ct We need to make things happen and deliver outstanding quality And make a profit Or our business will die…or worse it will become mediocre Becoming a HyperTh!nker Practice every single day 1. HyperSHIFT Role play and shift paradigm Look at a problem from a different viewpoint Don’t be attached to a single paradigm 2. MetaTHINK 3. HyperLINK 4. HyperACTIVE Step back Rethink Resource Sharpen the saw Lateral thinking Mind mapping Search and connect The Web 2.0 World Do It With Passion! Thinking is NOT passive! Make it happen! The HyperThinking company What does this mean for you, your projects, your clients and your network? It is the KEY to make our vision a reality Our goal: the smartest, most innovative .com agency Discovering the latest trends Doing amazing campaigns for our clients Make things happen, WOWing “I have an Idea” – on your todo list Atttitude changes everything If you don’t have it – FAKE IT! (practice makes perfect) Kaizen as a way of life Added value thinking starts small Kaizen everything! Small things can make a big difference The plan The ideas The execution Meetings Show your clients that you think of improving things ALL THE TIME. ZN approach to R&D: W&D Explore/learn (blog feeds/search) Innovate (try the ideas out/test/share with team) Inspire (get team and clients to try) The connection to growth The only way to grow our business is by proving that we deliver added value thinking We need to impress our clients (deliver beyond expectations) We need a deep emotional relationship with our clients: they want to work with us because we can hyperthink with them – show them new things, execute and show passion And get a reputation for WOWing So they come back to us and tell all their friends about what it’s like to work with the Hyperthinkers The meaning of... WOW? Wow defined wow 2 (wou) n. Slow variation in the pitch of a sound reproduction resulting from variations in the speed of the recording or reproducing equipment. wow 1 (wou) Informal interj. Used to express wonder, amazement, or great pleasure.n. An outstanding success.tr.v. wowed, wow·ing, wows To have a strong, usually pleasurable effect on: a performance that wowed the audience. Achieving this won’t be a walk in the park And it will be a personal challenge for each of you "For, believe me, the secret for harvesting from existince the greatest fruitfulness and enjoyment, is to live dangerously!" Friedrich Nietzsche An AfterHyperThought… My goals:To refresh the Hyperth!nker concept To share some practical ideas To explain how it fits with ZN To change your mental DNA To make the process of on-going learning a reality And continue HyperTh!nk!ng… "The future is not some place we are going to, but one we are creating. The paths are not to be found, but made, and the activity of making them, changes both the maker and the destination." John Schaar Your turn How can you become a Hyperthinker? How can you apply this thinking to your work? What can we do better as ZN? Where is the web heading to?
