PROJECT OBJECTIVES

Aim: to test and develop methodologies for community engagement in Manchester’s socio-cultural histories through digital mapping and geo-annotating places with research resources in the city

Objectives:
•To explore and develop partnerships between academic researchers and cultural institutions which enhance public knowledge of Manchester histories

•To establish a collaborative process for public engagement and research development with CRESC academics, cultural and community partners using digital and social media tools

•To make research on the histories of Manchester more visible and promote access to the city's knowledge resources

WHY MAPPING? WHY DIGITAL & SOCIAL MEDIA?
WORKSHOP OBJECTIVES

To find out what other people are doing and share methodologies for doing this kind of work

To see what the plans are for Manchester Histories Festival and whether we might do something together

To find out about current socio-cultural histories research and resources and...

...get academic research out of the academy (and into the streets!)

Univercityculture methodology:
Google fusion tables with research descriptors & location
'tagging' objects, buildings, streets with 'tips' through Foursquare, Google Maps
access points to archives, research outputs, blogs, user-generated content
'gamifying' structured activities to help people stumble upon research through QR codes & Twitter
....next?
finding other/better geo-tools
getting more academic researchers involved
working with other partners
testing out "public engagement" potential
working with public to create content
