Making it Wrok
Protocols set high standards for learning behaviors

Teacher is consistent in adhering to protocols

Protocols practiced and modeled with logical consequences

Support from administration, colleagues and parents

Discipline Techniques
DOs

Body language
Selective ignoring
Use student names and Individualization
Positive pinpointing
Eye contact
Voice (volume and tone)
Proximity control *

DON'Ts

Preach or moralize
Use physical control

Teacher Language
Make it clear, simple and direct
Be genuine and respectful
Focus on action or behavior
Show faith in student’s ability to follow rules
Reinforcing language, reminding language, redirecting language

Consequences
Consequences can be constructed to give the student an opportunity to learn from a mistake versus being punished for it

Consequences are reasonable and relevant *
Help student gain self-control
Help student reflect on mistakes and make amends
REMEMBER to:
Keep all students actively involved in every lesson!!

For example, while a student does a presentation, involve the other students in taking notes or evaluating it.
Use proximity control

be nearby....WALK up and down the rows, around the room, around the groups. STAND next to the restless.
It may be useful to:
Quietly finger tap the desk of any who are NOT paying attention....whisper their name.
Use student names in discussion. Use student names in examples or problems...Khalaf went to the store with

Remember!
If you ask,"Does anyone have any questions?"and you get no questions- that means studentsprobably don't know or understand enough to ask a question!!So, ask questions that will tell you if there is understanding. Just remember though that just because one student gives the answer it does NOT mean anyone else knows the answer.Ask more than one student to give the answer to the same question...Tell me more.Say it in a different way.How would you say it?
Teach Responsible Behavior
Level 0 = Irresponsibility

Unmotivated and undisciplined
Discrediting others
Interrupting, intimidating, manipulating, and abusing others
Physical education example:

Talking to friends when the teacher is giving instructions

Level 1 = Self-Control

Level 4 = Caring
Level 2 = Involvement
Level 3 = Self-Responsibility
May or may not participate in the day’s activity
Does not interfere with other students or teacher
Physical education example:

paiting for appropriate time to talk with friends

Show self control
Usually involved in the subject matter or activity

Physical education example:

Listening and performing activity
Trying even when they do not like the activity
Participation without complaint
Take responsibility for choices and for linking choices to their own identities
Work without direct supervision
Eventually take responsibility for their intentions and actions
Physical education example:

Practicing a skill without being told to do so
Trying new activities without encouragement
Motivated to extend their sense of responsibility by:

Cooperating
Giving support
Showing concern
Helping others

Physical education example:

Helping someone who is having trouble

Decrease Undesired Behavior
Reprimands

Identify unacceptable behavior
State briefly why it is unacceptable
Communicate desired behavior
Do not reprimand in front of others
Speak about behavior, not the person
Reinforce positive behavior when it occurs
Is a necessary precondition for effective teaching and learning
Decrease discipline problems
Increase time that can be used for learning and practice
Successfully establish the structures through which physical education class becomes a predictable, smoothly operating system.

Importance of Effective class management
REMEMBER
The more interactions, the less students are engaged in self-management.
