Multimedia Websites Using CMS Choosing the right software Factors to consider Security Support Security Documentation Community Learning Curve Hidden costs What kind of support does the application have How many people are working on it How long has it been around What organization is spearheading the project How vulnerable is it to hacking Is it being regularly patched and updated? It's easier to learn something if there is a lot of supporting documentation on it. What kind of community following does the software have? What does your own profession have to say about it? By Mia Jaeggli or how you can free yourself from HTML and other ungainly codes. University of California, Berkeley Environmental Design Library Technical Services Workleader Omeka Things to love about Omeka "It's so easy to use!" designed specifically for putting multimedia online customizable look Growing, evolving, never fixed designed for libraries, museums and archives Pachyderm Drupal What if? What if you could use one piece of software to upload media and organize them into webpages? ASK QUESTIONS! A LOT OF THEM. Have a list of your needs. Have a plan Center for History and New Media They also created Zotero! The Public Face Create Themed Exhibits This particular exhibit was created using many many different tools and modules in Drupal. These take a long time to set up and requires foundational knowledge about using Drupal. Not to worry though! The documentation on Drupal is extensive and the published texts are extremely helpful for jumping in. Why consider content management systems? The old way The new way Dynamic software 2.0 technologies Media friendly forms instead of manually coding HTML Server databases to upload images to Programs that reformat your images for you The community of coders does the work, so you don't have to But it's not entirely that simple AND KNOW THAT THINGS WILL NOT ALWAYS GO ACCORDING TO PLAN Mostly. http://pachyderm.nmc.org/docs/PachyUserManual.pdf What if you could take multiple exhibition websites and put them on one dynamic site? What if you used little or no web coding to do so? The New Media Consortium. (200?). Pachyderm User Manual: Template Workbook. Leonard, Anne. (2005). Pachderm 2.0 User Manual. Spor Create controlled taxonomies or folksonomies. You could even use Dublin Core as your model. Setting up all of the forms, taxonomies, aggregators and layouts takes considerable time and knowledge. Good thing there are a lot of books on the subject! There are hundreds of steps. Unlike Omeka and Pachyderm where the package is already constructed. As you can see, it takes a lot to create a Drupal site. But the payoff is more control over the organization of your site and all of the nifty modules you can play with. Key features A core package of basic features The more sophisticated work is done with modules A giant community of volunteer programmers. Hundreds of prefabricated themes to choose from. Customize or create a theme from scratch. Documentation and lots of it! About this presentation format You have just navigated through a whiteboard presentation created with Prezi. Send an email to the Library Tech Training Program; tdennis@lib.... How is Drupal built? Core software, comprised of PHP and JavaScript Drupal sits on top of and communicates with a MySQL database Which resides on your server. The core of Drupal comes with the very basic components blog forums a feed aggregator for other blogs basic structural elements for placing menus and sidebars generic (boring) themes All the extras come seperately. It's a "batteries not included" scenario. Research and plan out your idea for your site: you want to create a photo gallery. Find the right module, or three. Upload them to your Drupal files on the server. Follow the directions for setting it up in Drupal admin. Some assembly required. Scratch that. A lot of assembly required!!!
