Emotions and Moods Definitions Emotions-
intense feelings directed at someone or something
Caused by specific event
Very brief in duration
Specific and numerous in nature (specific emotions include anger, fear, sadness, happiness, disgust, and surprise)
Usually accompanied by distinct facial expressions
Action oriented in nature Moods
• Cause is often general and unclear
• Last longer than emotions hour or days
• More general
o Positive affect and negative affect
• Generally not indicated by distinct expressions
• Action oriented in nature
• Aspects that might affect someone’s emotions
o Day of the week and time of the day
o Weather
o Stress
o Social Activities
o Sleep
o Exercise
o Age
o Gender Emotional labor- a situation in which an employee expresses organizationally desired emotions during interpersonal transactions at work.
Ex.
Flight attendants-happy
Funeral directors- sad
Doctors- neutral Emotional dissonance- inconsistencies between the emotions people feel and the emotions they project. Ex. When someone has to be happy or nice when they might not like the person. Feign friendliness. Affective events theory (AET)- shows that employees react emotionally to things that happen to them at work, and this reaction influences their job performance and satisfaction.
