Verbal Irony in the Great Gatsby
Transcript of Verbal Irony in the Great Gatsby
by: Kaitlyn S., Amanda M., and Chelsea M. Verbal irony heightens the suspense of the story. “In consequence, I’m inclined to reserve all judgments…(1)”
This quote was said by Nick Carroway.
He says in this quote that he tries not to judge people.
But in the end he judges everyone. He even calls his Daisy, Tom and Jordan Rotten. “I hate careless people (58).”
Jordan Baker says this quote in the Great Gatsby This is Verbally ironic because Jordan Baker, herself, is careless An example of Jordan's carelessness would be when she is driving in a careless fashion and almost hits someone. “I thought you were rather an honest, straightforward person” (177).
“I thought you were rather an honest, straightforward person” (177).
Jordan Baker also says this quote. She says this but is Most dishonest character in the story
“By God, I may be old-fashioned in my ideas, but women run around too much these days to suit me.” (103).
Tom says this in the Great Gatsby. This is verbally ironic because he comments on women running around, but he cheats . “He put out his broad, flat hand with well-concealed dislike. ‘I’m glad to see you sir…’ (116).
Tom also says this line. This is also Ironic because we know that Tom does not like Gatsby, but he is acting like he does. “…he killed a man once…he was a German spy during the war…”(44)
These things are said by Gatsby's house guests on the night he throws his first party. The rumors they spread are Ironic because they do not know him and they do not know anything about him.
