"Animal I Have Become" Three Days Grace
I can't escape this hell
So many times I've tried
But I'm still caged inside
Somebody get me through this nightmare
I can't control myself
So what if you can see the darkest side of me
No one will ever change this animal I have become
Help me believe it's not the real me
Somebody help me tame this animal!
This animal, this animal
I can't escape myself
So many times I've lied
But there's still rage inside
Somebody get me through this nightmare
I can't control myself
So what if you can see the darkest side of me
No one will ever change this animal I have become
Help me believe it's not the real me
Somebody help me tame this animal I have become
Help me believe it's not the real me
Somebody help me tame this animal
Somebody help me through this nightmare
I can't control myself
Somebody wake me from this nightmare
I can't escape this hell
This animal, this animal
This animal, this animal
This animal, this animal
This animal
So what if you can see the darkest side of me
No one will ever change this animal I have become
Help me believe it's not the real me
Somebody help me tame this animal I have become
Help me believe it's not the real me
Somebody help me tame this animal!
This animal I have become

Lyrics to mainly focus on:
This piece of media "Love is the Movement" reflects how we as a society must make the effort to achieve the basic essential to human life; unconditonal love. "Love is the Movement" refers to the Reign of God because currently in our world today we as a society are trying to achieve unconditonal love; reconciling with one another, showing compassion whenever needed, peacemaking and other ideals for this concept (Already/rightnow.) Yet what COMPICATES this media piece is that even though were are moving towards unconditonal love to society there is still war, lying, greed, and other opposing ideals that prevent the Reign of God being achieved in our world (Not yet.) If we as a society follow this media piece "Love is the Movement" then we can slowly achieve God's "one thing."
Do you remember what happened on 2/19/09 in Ms. Garcia's class?
I will give you a hint:
OBEDIENCE AND CONFORMITY:
Obedience and Conformity has a function to replace our own sense of morals which can either be good or bad. It can be by bringing organization to society and prevents chaos. Yet can be bad because it prevents you from having any freedom, no ability to think, or no individuality (Obedience and Conformity class notes 2/19/09.) The role of authority and responsibility comes into play which is shown in the article where Dr. Zimbardo made a prison study where students were assigned to play as guards but soon took their power to new heights. The students who were in charge became abusive and conformed into their own ways to keep order and by the fourth day the abuse became sexual humiliation. Lastly, Dr. Zimbardo was in too deep of this experiment and lost touch with reality until his girlfriend snapped him out of it. If Dr. Zimbardo continued with his study this could have led to "lower" students being fully dehumanized.
Dehumanization is when you treat human (or any being) with no dignity or humanity whatsoever. A person loses the sense of right or wrong when the dehumanize a being; humiliating them by treating them lower than they are worth in society.
Obedience and Conformity is important to know because we need to understand the impact that these concepts do to our morals. They can either make society or a person good or can deteriorate a society or an individual. The power of authority can make one either power hungry to receive more power or pressured to conform and follow the authoritve figure's every whim.
MEDIA
Universe of Obligation is defined as a circle of individuals and groups for whom we feel responsible, whose rights we seek to protect, and whose injuries call for amends ("Who is My Neighbor" class notes, 10/17/08).
Important concept to learn because since we each have different values, priorites, experiences and intimacy with others this makes our obligations to other beings different from each person. We see differences to who is included in our responsibility or not. Also, it is important to achieve common good; a good where all members of society have access.
Forgiveness means a time where we each reflect on our life and reconcile the we are or the person we want to be/Jesus wants us to be ("Reconciling" notes 3/3/09).
Reign of God is defined as a time, but not a place, in which everyone fully embodies the "one thing" that God desires; unconditional love for everyone (“Reign of God” class notes, 10/03/09)
Important concept to know because we must reflect on the wrongs that we have or others have personal done in our lives which could be hard to admit. Also, forgiveness or reconciliation is the sacrament of healing which celebrates our faith that God gives mercy and willingness to forgive the harm and wrongs we recognize or confess. Also important because with God's mercy by our side during our reflection of our wrongs we slowly progress into the person whom we and/or God wants us to become in society.
In society I can apply this by having all individuals be in my Universe of Obligation; even if that means that individuals on my last ring (opposing The David Cash Case Study). An example where I can put the Universe of Obligation to use is when a being is getting persecuted by others for being socially, physically, or emotionally "different." I can put this being, whether friend, foe, or stranger in my Universe of Obligation by standing up for them and actually taking action instead of just watching them getting persecuted by another. We as a society can move towards this idea by working together to insure every individual's rights is necessary for a genuine human life. In basic terms, if I defend a persecuted being who is not receiving the common good (putting them in my UO) I could be considered as an UPSTANDER in society.
The Reign of God is important to learn because unconditional love is the "one thing" Gods asks from us. God put Jesus on the Earth to teach us about unconditional love where Jesus mainly focused on action that flows from love; kindness, compassion, FORGIVENESS, etc. Which means we are God's ambassadors’ and have potential to spread unconditional love not as a individuals, but as a community where everyone embodies God's "one thing."
The Reign of God can be applied to society by just doing the smallest acts of kindness, service, sacrifice, and other teachings from Jesus. If ever human being in society (including myself) came together and fully embodied the Reign of God, there would not be any wars, lies, greed, judgments, and misunderstandings in the world which would thus achieve God's "one thing." Also with unconditional loves comes the responsibility of loving or showing concern for another being even when they are a friend or stranger which leads to the UNIVERSE OF OBLIGATION.
"Animal I have Become" reflects in my perspective the Human Behavior Experiment article. The "animal" in this song best represents the students in the Dr. Zimbardo experiment where they acted like "ANIMALS" by humiliating the "weaker" students who did not have the power. These students before were normal without the slightest hint that they could have such a dark side as it refers to in the song. This song describes how a person has both a dark/animal side and a human side and when put to the test with too much power or rage in their hands and follow through with dehumanizing acts without a care in the world. Thus, reflects the students in the experiment who did not have a clue or care how they acted once they received the power that they were assigned and obeyed what was prompted but twisted the power into their own terms. This media basically prompts how we as a society (or he the lead singer) have our "animal side" which can be released if we get a hold of power which can be evil (dehumanizing) and we (or him) don't know how to control or care this power until it is too late. Also that when we (or he) become an animal we (or he) might want to escape out of the evil that is committed and want to show everyone that this is not how we act normally; but only when we receive this power. Basically; we each have an animal side which can be unleashed with the slightest rage/power inflicted upon us which is portrayed through this song.
MEDIA:
Forgiveness is an important aspect in a society because it one of the most challenging concepts to actually forgive a wrong whether it was a small or huge act. Thus allowing the person to heal internally knowing that they just relieved by someone due to their wrong doing. Also, forgiveness applies to the Holocaust where non-Aryans such as Jews and Gypsies who were mass murdered; 6 million dead. After this horrific tradgedy, most victims were left with nothing but painful memories from the Nazis. Yet, out of the goodness of their hearts, they forgave their persecutors for their dehumanizing acts. Also, some Nazis actually wanted to make peace with the victims of the Holocaust by admitting their crimes because they wanted to go out into the world with a clean slate instead of having all of those horrible memories drain them away. The victims who forgive the Nazis are upstanders in my opinion because they are the better person to see the good in all evil and take action to help the Nazis reconcile their past crimes. I could use forgiveness as a way to actually become the person who I want to be; instead of being a coward for not admitting my wrongs or not forgiving the admitted crimes of others. Society could achieve forgiveness if they actually have the right stage of mind to forgive others which makes them (me) the better person all-around; UPSTANDER!
In society obedience and conformity play a huge role each day; school, work, family, etc. With these concepts at play an individual can abuse these concepts such as the Holocaust where some Germans conformed to Hitler's/Nazis ideals either out of fear or the propaganda that was shown everywhere. Today, I see conformity/obedience everywhere, from physical appearance to behavior. I admit that I have conformed in someway or another such as my clothes, hair style or my personality which was inspired by characters from the media (movies, tv shows, magazines. Yet I am not at the extent of obeying or conforming to a situation which can dehumanize (Dr. Zimbardo experiment) or "kill" (Miligram Experiment with shocking) a human being. Conformity and Obedience lies everywhere in society, sometimes can be harmless but other times dangerous which can effect society/me to be an UPSTANDER!
To forgive is complex because there is a certain level of wrong to which a person can own up to and forgive. Sometimes the wrong doing was too extreme that it might be hard to come clean and reflect with whom we/Jesus wants us to become in life. Which thus makes forgiveness complicated in some situations.
Obedience and Conformity is complex because sometimes we are blind to these concepts that lay right in front of our eyes. We, as human beings sometimes are not aware of our actions that harm others. Also these concepts are complex because it is hard to use one's conscience in these situations; to know right from wrong or a lax conscience. Basically we as individuals can be blind when there is too much obedience and conformity in our lives which makes this complex.
Complex because the Reign of God is right now but not yet. Such as the world having moments of peace but in contrast there is war.
Reflection
Dear God,
Please help me become an upstander in this world through forgiveness, and the ways Jesus taught us; Universe of Obligation and Reign of God. Help me have the heart to forgive any wrongs from either others or myself; even if they are painful to admit, I want to have a clean slate and a new set of mind under God himself.
Amen.
