A first person narrative comprising photos, graphics, spoken narration, videos, & music The practice of using computer-based tools to tell a story Elements of Digital Storytelling (Joe Lambert) • Point of View—Perspective and Audience considered • Use of music—sets mood • Have a dramatic question or important lesson learned • Emotional Content-major theme • Voice over narration—helps make meaning • Economy—balance between auditory and visual tracks of meaning • Pacing—sustains attention by modifying rhythm Outcomes for Students • Digital storytelling can be used for creating authentic, student-based interactions (Lowenthal & Dunlap, 2010) Collaborative work on projects Peer learning activities • Digital storytelling can mediate content area knowledge development (Bull & Kajder, 2005; Gould & Schmidt, Mathematics Teacher, 104[4];2010; Roby, 2010). Recount or reflect on historical events Explain scientific or mathematical information Organizing/Building a Digital Story •BRAINSTORM Start with a sample of writing that conveys a message. The product can be: •instructive or persuasive •reflective of specific content or a topical position, •historical, predictive, •or strictly personal and anecdotal Technology Tools Record voices as a podcast via Audacity Garage Band (mac) Windows Media Player(pc) ...or on a tape recorder. •Combine elements on programs such as: iMovie (free for mac users) Windows Movie Maker (free for pc users) Powerpoint (or Prezi!) or more sophisticated software programs such as Final Cut. Apply transitions between slides. Archive on CD or DVD and upload on ePortfolio LIT 301: YA Literature (Spring 2012), Dr. Bette Kirschstein Book Trailers: A Sample LIT 373, Early 20th Century British Literature (Fall 2012) Replace traditional research project PPT presentation with a digital story. Students will tell the story of some of the following:  The Armory Art Show of 1913  The Ballets Russes  The Bloomsbury Circle of Writers & Artists Digital stories can also be used outside the classroom The English & Modern Language Studies department plans to make a digital story for its Pace web page. They will showcase: o Faculty and Student accomplishments o Student activities o Classes in action o Programs such as fiction and poetry readings Linda Ansterndig: My introduction to Digital Storytelling --Through ePortfolio Involvement and Collaboration with Cohort of schools -- NERCOMP Conference at UMASS Amherst My Digital Story—a work in progress Digital Storytelling in ENG 201:Writing in the Disciplines Spring 2012 Culminating Part of Semester Long Research Project Fall 2011: Learning Community with MKT 250 (Karen Berger) Students created a digital story about a critical issue relating to the brand/product they researched throughout the semester Faculty Development Efforts Digital Commons Teaching Circle- Spring 2012 10 Faculty eTern support Guest Speakers Future Plans Questions?
