Why do we feel that collaboration is important?
Smaller
Openness in Education and
Nurturing the Collaborative Impulse
What's the big deal about Online Learning?
What do Personal Learning Environments look like?
Has learning outgrown the “Virtual Campus?”
How do we support ubiquitous education?
How do we liberate the impulse to collaborate?
Why do we feel that Collaboration is important?
What are we about?
Is there some commonality?
We are all part of a system with overlapping and complementary goals.
The system exists to provide
accessible,
affordable,
relevant, and
rigorous
academic programs that improve...
quality of life

civic capacity

economic well being
We are supposed to adapt to meet changing individual and societal needs for education and employment.
Oh, and by the way...
Are these goals important?
Do we believe in them?
What about Online Learning?
Retool your skillset to prepare for the new economy! Take online courses at MCO colleges!

Save Time

Save Money

Expect Quality

Offering online degree programs to address the demands of a global economy and evolving job market.
Share UMass tradition of excellence beyond the geographical constraints
And we may have done all of these things, but what else have we done?
We have disaggregated the College from its physical campus.
But we adopted the physical classroom as a metaphor..
 why?
This metaphor
is being challenged and replaced
by the “Personal Learning Environment.”
What do these Personal Learning Environments look like?
Individuals aggregating in dynamic Collectives
Actively creating shared culture
What types of tools are being used?
Small, flexible, portable, accessible, and inexpensive learning tools that are
Free and distributed
Support personal publishing
Support collaborative publishing
Support social and dynamic authoring.

Our learners are using the same tools for formal as well as informal education, bridging virtually every aspect of their lives.
What tools are being used?
The personal learning environment is looking less and less and less like the traditional LMS...
that is modeled on the physical classroom.
Openness in Education and
Nurturing the Collaborative Impulse

But
Why?
Are these developments further disaggregating learning from the “Virtual Campus?”
Should our dialogue be shifting from
“Distance Education” to “Ubiquitous Education?”
Is this exciting?
Individuals Dynamically Forming Collectives.
Based on…

… common interests
… common needs
… shared creation
… shared culture
… touching every aspect of their lives
… throughout their lives.
For those of us who are educators, we have to be thinking...
“Wow, what an opportunity!”
Are we surprised by this?
Did it catch us unawares?
Do you buy it?
If it is real, we might have to ask what are our roles?
We sort of understand the
role of the individual.
What is the role of the
College or University?
What is the role of the organizational collective?
Supporting Community
Facilitating the Creation of Shared Culture
Supporting Communities of Active Participation

This is all about Inclusion
… about Collaboration

… about Community

… about the intersections and common threads that run through communities

individuals

… whose learning is ubiquitous.
How do we support ubiquitous, community-based, dynamic education?
How do we liberate the impulse to collaborate?
I think that we reduce the barriers to collective creation, sharing, distribution, and recreation through derivative works.
