A pilot study is a small scale preliminary study conducted in order to improve upon the study design prior to performance of a full-scale research project.
A pilot study can provide potentially valuable insights that can be applied to the full-scale study to improve the chances of clearer findings. It is a chance to test things such as instruments and protocols, to evaluate feasibility, time, cost, or to anticipate and avoid possible adverse events.
Pilot studies are a crucial element of a good study design. They can reveal deficiencies in the design of a proposed study. These can then be addressed before starting the larger study. Conducting a pilot study does not guarantee success in the main study, but it does increase the likelihood.
1.Determine the issue that you are addressing

3.Critically review the relevant literature that provides background and reasons for your study
4.Determine conceptual framework that will guide your data collection and analysis
5.Determine participants and context/setting

Specific courses should be chosen in consultation with the student’s advisor, keeping in mind the twin goals of familiarity with diverse traditions (one course in each area) and competence to work within a particular tradition (two additional courses in one area). General research methodology courses may count as either quantitative or qualitative with the consent of the advisor.
