Catholic Social teaching:Abortion GSGC Blk 7 Jane Yu Images of Jesus Being an Upstander Case Study: Abortion ME:Morality What is Morality? a set of values and principles that guides one's choice and determine what kind of person he or she is becoming. It shapes our behavior and acts as an influence Morality also has the different stages of childhood which is influenced by many external sources such as parents, mature adulthood which is mainly by internal sources from within, and of adolescence which contains a mixture of both values from authoritive figures and their own values An example would be Gospel Values which are equivalent to Jesus' Values GSGC notes Jan. 9,2009 What are the Church's Teaching on LIFE: we are made in the image and likeness of God Only God has absolute dominion over us We must uphold and defend the dignity of every human life from conception to death In this sign, we see that an animal's babies are protected by the law and their consequences go to a great height, however we see in our society that human's babies are killed at a rate of 3,304 babies per day. Statistics: A baby is aborted every 26 seconds 137 babies are aborted every hour 3,304 babies are aborted every day 23,196 babies are aborted every week 100,516 babies are aborted every month Over 1.2 million babies are aborted every since Over 52 million aborted in the US since 1973 The US only makes up 3% of the abortions worldwide… 46 million babies are killed each year around the world IN COMPARISON: From the Revolutionary War in 1775, Civil War, WWI, WWII, Korean War, Vietnam War, and the Iraq War, there have been 648,542. In comparison, the war of the unborn have been 52 million since 1973 Justification for Abortion It is not life eliminate suffering financial burden rape/incest my choice/my body Can we afford to choose life? Candy- $6 billion/year Ice cream -$10 billion/year Soft Drinks - $30 billion/year Beer- $50 billion/year Legal Gambling $300 billion/year Dog Snacks- $39.3 million/year Pet Grooming- $175.3 million/year Cosmetics- $27 billion/year Rape/Incest Although it is a very unfortunate event where the mother must carry the burden with her However does murdering a baby shed the impressions made from rape? The answer that would be replied with would be that two wrongs do not make a right. It is not the child’s fault that their father did something horrible therefore it the innocent being should not be punished. The only time that a mother is allowed to abort her child is when it is indirectly and when her life is at risk, meaning death. Aborting the child indirectly is when the uterus, with the fetus is removed, therefore there is no direct harm toward the fetus. What if the child has a defect? The Catholic Church still puts a stand of being against abortion when the child will be born with a defect because all humans are made in the image of God. Taking out a human life because of an imperfection is still not moral. Also the child should always be loved regardless of their physical condition because there are adults with defects that continue to walk the land of the earth as of today. Would murdering them be okay just because they have defects? 2 PHOTOs: Aborted fetus's at its 1st trimester in comparison to a quarter. *Warning EXTREMELY graphic* 11 week boy 7 weeks History Of Abortion It has happened before: Abortion were legal and performed in the 1800s By 1965 Abortion was banned in all 50 states 1973 the Supreme Court made abortion a fundamental right under the US Constitution Roe vs. Wade was decided based on the Ninth Amendment (right to privacy) Partial-Birthy Abortion Ban Act- signed 2003 MORE: Roe vs. Wade. In summary, Jane Roe which is the alias for Norma McCorvey, claimed to be pregnant as a result of rape and wanted to be able to have an abortion. Although she was not really raped, 2 female lawyers took her case all the way up to the Supreme Court and won with the argument of a right to privacy. Roe never did have an abortion because by the time it was decriminated she had her child and is now a proud Pro-Lifer. Risk and Consequences -Excessive bleeding -Scarring of uterus -Damage to other organs -Premature births -Future miscarriages -Infertility -Breast cancer -Depression/guilt/anxiety -Suicide -death This includes the Catholic Church's teaching on abortion. The Catholic Church's teachings can be found in the Catechism. The Catechism of the Catholic Church ( CCC) has values and principles for Catholics. It provides the stance that active Catholics should execute. Also the Christian Morality includes the three topics of conscience, free will, and responsibility. Conscience is the awareness of right and wrong and having the sense of duty to do good. However with free will we have the ability to choose right or wrong. Part of the Catholic Social Teaching, Catholics have the responsibility for our moral action. GSGC Notes Jan. 12, 2009 The Holy Bible & Catechism of Catholic Church From the Four Evangelist: Mark, Matthew, Luke, and John All four Gospel writers have a different audience, location, and time frame which results into different portrayels of Jesus. Mark: The suffering Jesus because of the persecuted gentile and Roman Christians Matthew: The teaching and law bringing Jesus because of the converted Jews Luke: the merciful, loving, compassinate Jesus because of the lower class Greeks John: the human and emotional Jesus because he is speaking to all christians GSGC Notes Sept. 29, 2008 Music Video: Hillsong- When I Think About the Lord When I Think about the Lord, How He saved me, how He raised me, how He filled me, with the Holy Ghost. How He healed me, to the uttermost. When I Think about the Lord, how He picked me up and turned me around, how He placed my feet on solid ground Chrous* It makes me wanna shout, Halleilujiah, Thank you JESUS , LORD, your worthy, of all the glory, and all the honor, and all the praise... (Repeat*) From the Catholic Social Teaching we know that we are all made in the Image of God and that we are loved individually and equally by Him. Catholic Christian's believe that He came down from Heaven to die for us, individually. This is why His passion is so important to Catholics because it was His main reason for being. To suffer. Also He as man and God is also at an understanding of our suffering, therefore we are never alone because He understands and knows each and everyone of us from within and without. Quotes from the BIble "And if men struggle with each other and strike a woman with child so that she has a miscarriage, yet there is no further injury, he shall surely be fined as the woman's husband may demand of him; and he shall pay as the judges decide. But if there is any further injury, then you shall appoint as a penalty life for life." (Exodus 21:22-23) - a law given since the Old Testament stating that if any man were to hurt man to result into an abortion or miscarriage then they are to be punished. This shows that God has values life before birth. "Only you shall not eat flesh with its life, that is, its blood" (Genesis 9:4) You shall not murder (Exodus 20:13) - When combined, Genesis 9:4 gives the definition that any bloodshed is human life and in Exodus 20:13 we see that we are not murder any life. Listen to me, O house of Jacob, all you who remain of the house of Israel, you whom I have upheld since you were conceived, and have carried since your birth. Even to your old age and gray hairs I am he, I am he who will sustain you. I have made you and I will carry you; I will sustain you and I will rescue you (Isaiah 46:3-4) - the line," I have upheld you since you were conceived", shows that at conception God has recognized the fetus as life and is loved equally by Him.
