Support for PreziDesktop (offline editor)

by Katrin Leinweber

Can you do something in your online Prezi editor that you can't do in PreziDesktop? don't worry, that's because updates, bugfixes and new features are usually released 1st to our online editor and to Prezi Desktop a few days later. Please refrain from sending in support tickets, tweets or opening forum topics about this.

Current version: PreziDesktop v. 3.075

For a running list of new features and introductory information about new versions of PreziDesktop , please visit http://prezi.com/learn/new-features/

Sample work-flow

Generally, our online and offline editor have the same features, see the manual for details on how to use them. Since Prezi Desktop runs on your computer, it includes some functions which you are probably familiar with from other desktop programs. The workflow is therefore a bit different than in our online editor:

  1. After successful installation, Prezi Desktop should start automatically. If not, start it via the desktop icon, start menu entry or dock launcher.
  2. Offline prezis can be started directly via “File > New” or downloaded from existing online prezis.
  3. To download an existing online prezi, log into your Prezi account, select the prezi you want and click “Download > Download for Prezi Desktop...”. Save this file to a local folder. The file will have the suffix .pez
  4. Open a .pez file from within Prezi Desktop (“File > Open”) or simply double-click on it in your file manager.
  5. If you downloaded the .pez file from an online prezi and choose “Open in PreziDesktop” right away, please make sure to save it in a folder of your choice (“File > Save as...”). Otherwise it might just be saved in your browser’s temporary download folder, from where it might be purged, depending on your browser or operating system settings.
  6. You can upload a prezi to your Prezi online account at any time by choosing “File > Upload to prezi.com”, adding title and description and pressing “Upload”. The account it is uploaded to is the one specified in “License > Change user”.
  7. If you need to present from a different computer than you own, simply export your prezi to a portable version via “File > Export as portable prezi”. Unpack the resulting .zip file and run prezi.exe (on Windows) or prezi.app (on Mac OSX).

Prezi Desktop automatically checks for updates and prompts you to “Install now” or “Postpone...” if one is found. If you are in the middle of an important project and don’t need the new features or bugfixes, it is advised to wait with installing the update. If you do install it, please make a back up of the .pez file you are working on. If problems occur in the new version, you can always revert back, by downloading an older version: http://cdn01.prezi.com/prezi/desktop/PreziDesktop_3.0XY.air (replace XY in this link with the version number you want).

Known issues and limitations

  • Working offline excludes your Prezi from our online versioning system. The trade-off for confidential and non-Internet dependent editing of prezis is the responsibility to back-up, version and secure the .pez files yourself. Please use appropriate methods to prevent data loss or unauthorized access. For example, create a new version of your prezi each day via “File > Save as”.
  • The system requirements of Prezi Desktop are the same as Adobe AIR’s. You can find them here.
  • Administrative privileges are required to install and run Prezi Desktop properly. If you work in a university or corporate environment, please contact your IT department for help.
  • License information must be downloaded once after installation. Please make sure your firewall allows Adobe AIR, Prezi Desktop and prezi.com through, at least temporarily.
  • Some media file types must be converted to Flash upon insertion. You will be prompted in this case to allow the upload to our conversion servers. The data you upload is not stored for longer than is needed to complete the insertion into your prezi. With an appropriate conversion program you can also do this off-line yourself.
  • Some security software seems to interfere with the download and execution of the .air executable installer files. If you receive an error message like “Installer file damaged...” Please try disabling such security software temporarily while downloading and installing Prezi Desktop or white-list the file.
  • Instead of using the download widget on http://prezi.com/desktop#download you can also download the .air installer file directly: http://cdn01.prezi.com/prezi/desktop/PreziDesktop_3.042.air (to download older versions, simply replace the version number at the end of the link with an earlier one).
  • If Prezi Desktop does not seem to recognize a renewed license, or stays in the trial period although you have already upgraded your account, please try to trigger the license data download, by entering your login credentials again in “License > Change user” or following these suggestions.

Get support

If any problems occur that can’t be solved with the advice above, please create a report in our forums or via our Zendeskt ticketing system (the life buoy symbol on http://prezi.com/support/). Please be precise and report as many details about the problem as possible. Try to include the following:

  • Which operating system version and architecture (32 or 64 bit) and which Prezi Desktop version you are experiencing the problem with?
  • Which steps did you do before the problem occurred?
  • A screenshot of the problem or the URL of the uploaded prezi or the .pez file

Having these details is immensely helpful for our support team and the developers to track down the error source and solve your issue more quickly.
