megaregions: large networks of metropolitan areas, where most of the population growth by mid-century will take place.
There regions were found by anylizing
global dataset of nighttime light emissions 
population data 
They then process the light data in combination with published estimates of national GDP to produce rough but useful estimates of the economic activity of each region. 
They also looked at estimates of technological and scientific innovation.
