Definition of Problem
Improve
Accessibility
Defined as right opportunity of reaching or using
Addresses
        physical
                 and
                     psychological
                                  needs
"Can I get there"
"Am I welcome there"

Grab Bar
Grab Bar
Defining the problem
A solution
Definition is subjective to an individual
Need a way to compare different options in terms of their
accessibility
Quantitatively
Control Area = 1.767m²
Subtract the area blocked by impeding
objects.
Accessibility =
ratio of impeded circle
to to the control circle

Use a control area using our 1.5m diameter
barrier free circle
Recall barrier free construction
and requirements for accessibility
NBCC
CSA O86 - 01
dictates wood engineering
dictates framing requirements
CSA S16
dictates connections
Vr = 0.6(phi)(n)(m)(Ab)(Fu)
Tr = 0.75(phi)(n)(Ab)(Fu)
Q = (3/8)(b/a) - (t³)/32800
Mr = (phi)(Fb)(S)(K)
Vr = (phi)(Fv)(2A/3)
Pwrdl = 108.25(G²)(D)(L)
Mr. Apple was interviewed on Feb 24, 2010 with a
occupational therapist from Glenrose Hospital
Physical needs
Psychological needs
Went to visit son in Toronto...

Can't access the backyard
Doesn't like when things move
If he needs wheelchair - might need to move
Has support of wife
losing weight - easier to move

Son told a white lie to get his father to come:
"theres hardly and stairs"
but there were.. alot
Occupational Therapist
Use cane, sometimes walker (thresholds)
Wants hand rails closer to stairs
Likes skinny shower and passages
Manages stairs with "Easy cane"
Requires the use of grab bars at doors

"Ramps do not work for people
with canes"

Some locations deemed unacceptable
for grab bars - Question the strength
of the bar and mounting.
Orders basic supplies (rails, contractors)
Counsels on avaliable products & funding
Funding provided for lifts. etc.
Asses the mobility concerns

Cane <-> Walker <-> Wheelchair
ramp placement is not pro-active
Capacity of Grab bars unknown...What is it?
Limit States:
Screws:
Stud Capacity:
Tension Failure
Shear Failure
Pullout
Factor in Prying
Moment Capacity
Shear Capacity
Deflection (L/180), (L/360)
1 and 2 studs
Different Oreintations
Scews:
P
Prying action function of bar
dimensions
Without Prying action:
  Vr = 21.2KN
  Tr = 23.2 KN
  Pwdrl = 28 KN

With Prying action:
  Vr = 21.2 KN
  Tr:
    12" bar = 7.7 KN
    24" bar = 3.9 KN
    36" bar = 2.6 KN
  Pwdrl:
    12" bar = 9.3 KN
    24" bar = 4.7 KN
    36" bar = 3.1 KN
Studs:
1 stud bar on face
2 stud bar on face (doors)
1 stud bar on edge (wall)
Conclusion:

Don't mount them on the face of 1 stud
If Deflection is a concern use larger bars
Bars mounted on walls should not be
used for full body weight support
Threshold bars mounted on two studs are
adequate for full body weight

Improve accessibility
Modifications widened doorway to 32" clear distance
Improved accesibility by 16 points (of 100)
Greatest accesibility increase by 25 points (of 100)
Thank you
