Why do Earthquakes occur?
Earthquakes occur because rock beneath the Earth’s surface begins to break or slip along a fault line. The epicenter of an earthquake is where the plates fist begin to move, this is also the place that feels the strongest movement from the earthquake.

What happens above the earth during earthquakes?
Mass destruction and many deaths occur on the earth's surface . This includes buildings crashing down, twisted bridges and fires because of broken gas lines .
What happens underground during an earthquake?
During an earthquake the plates are moving past one another at a transform, convergent , or divergent boundary. This energy has built up over hundreds of years causing a sudden quake when the plates finally shift. Normally these are small and not felt by humans but every once in awhile we have one that really shakes things up.
The Charleston Earthquake
The Great Charleston Earthquake occurred at 9:50 p.m. on August 31, 1886 and lasted just about a minute. The earthquake was a 7.3 magnitude and caused 5.5 million dollars in damage (about $112 million in today's money) and destroyed over 2,000 buildings and killed between 60 and 110 people. Some of the damage can still be seen today around Charleston if you know where to look.
How Strong was the Earthquake?
-The earthquake was a 7.3-6 magnitude
-This was the largest recorded earthquake in South Carolina
-it was felt in distant areas such as Boston, Massachusetts; Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Chicago, Illinois; Cuba and Bermuda.
-The quake also rang church bells in New York and Boston
Why did this Earthquake happen here?
Even though Charelston is not on the edge of a tectonic palte anymore we are still affected by the tectonic forces in the mid-ocean ridge.
Also old faults can begin to push on the edge of a contient and cause them to move.
What would happen if Charleston had an Earthquake today?
If it was announced that the was going to be an earthquake in Charleston many people would panic and start to earthquake proof their houses and many older buildings down town. I also think the leaders would have earthquake preparedness classes and warnings so the public would know what to do.
Why do earthquakes happen where they do?
Earthquakes happen where the do because of old and new fault lines along the plates. Earthquakes occur because the plates start to push apart or together.
What would Charleston be at risk for?
Charleston would be at risk for a major liquid faction and some non-earthquake proof buildings collapsing. Also the major lack in awareness and preparation could lead to lots more damage.
Why did this Earthquake happen here?

Also old faults can begin to push on the edge of a continent and cause them to move.
Why are geologist important?
Geologist save many live from earthquakes each by predicting when and where they will happen so the community will be prepared. They provide essential information for solving problems ,public health and establishing governmental policies to help protect and save people from earthquakes. Because the more we know the safer we are!
