VALIDITY AND AUTHENTICITY OR -- SO, CAN I ACTUALLY CITE THIS? TOM FRANCIS IS: IN 2012, TOM FRANCIS SPOKE TO THE GDC. A games writer
A contributor for PCGamer.com, the official web counterpart to the PC Gamer print magazine
The designer and developer of "Gunpoint", a "creative stealth puzzle game that lets you rewire its levels to trick people." "How To Explain Your Game To An Asshole" His GDC talk was called: 1. genuineness: the genuineness or truth of something
2. correctness: the legal validity or correctness of a legal document AUTHENTICITY: 3. being "real real" or "real fake" but not "fake real" or "fake fake" The authenticity paradox , as defined by James H. Gilmore and B. Joseph Pine II in their book "Authenticity: What consumers really want" , contains the following axioms:
If you are authentic, you don’t have to say you’re authentic.
If you say you’re authentic, then you’d better be authentic.
It’s easier to be authentic, if you don’t say you’re authentic. SO BACK TO TOM @ THE GDC...
Although Gilmore and Pine are interested in the authenticity of products and consumers’ experience of products, their axioms apply to organizations, individuals, design principles, and yes... research too. (Tom's first slide) http://www.pentadact.com/2012-03-17-gdc-talk-how-to-explain-your-game-to-an-asshole/ Tom's 3-17-2012 blog entry: http://www.pentadact.com/2012-03-17-gdc-talk-how-to-explain-your-game-to-an-asshole/ "This isn’t really about indie versus mainstream, or arthouse versus commercial. It’s just about communicating efficiently enough that everyone who would like your game ends up playing it. I think it’s a shame when that doesn’t happen."
-Tom Francis, Asshole In PSYCHOLOGY, validity is the extent to which a test measures what it claims to measure. It is vital for a test to be valid in order for the results to be accurately applied and interpreted.
Validity isn’t determined by a single statistic, but by a body of research that demonstrates the relationship between the test and the behavior it is intended to measure.
There are three types of validity: VALIDITY http://schedule.gdconf.com/speaker/Tom-Francis GREAT... so NOW what? Let's get REAL for a minute... http://www.gdconf.com/conference/design.html http://psychology.about.com/od/researchmethods/f/validity.htm Content validity:
When a test has content validity, the items on the test represent the entire range of possible items the test should cover. Individual test questions may be drawn from a large pool of items that cover a broad range of topics. Criterion-related Validity:
A test is said to have criterion-related validity when the test has demonstrated its effectiveness in predicting criterion or indicators of a construct. There are two different types of criterion validity:
Concurrent Validity occurs when the criterion measures are obtained at the same time as the test scores. Predictive Validity occurs when the criterion measures are obtained at a time after the test. Construct Validity:
A test has construct validity if it demonstrates an association between the test scores and the prediction of a theoretical trait. Intelligence tests are one example of measurement instruments that should have construct validity. Validity determines whether the research truly measures that which it was intended to measure or how truthful the research results are. http://www.youtube.com/user/IndieGameCave (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rCNGjZw598Q) http://www.pentadact.com/page/4/ http://www.gunpointgame.com http://thiscageisworms.com/2012/03/07/how-to-make-a-good-game-or-why-planescape-is-pretty-good/ http://www.gamasutra.com/view/news/39864/Road_to_the_IGF_Tom_Francis_Gunpoint.php#.UEbFK9ZlTVU http://www.theverge.com/gaming/2012/3/7/2851124/how-to-properly-describe-a-video-game-a-helpful-lesson-from-gdc http://indiegames.com/2012/02/road_to_the_igf_tom_francis_gu.html http://www.indiegamemag.com/gdc-12-how-to-explain-your-game-to-an-asshole/#.UEbHNNZlTVV http://www.alexa.com/siteinfo/theverge.com# http://www.alexa.com/siteinfo/thiscageisworms.com# http://www.alexa.com/siteinfo/gamasutra.com# http://www.alexa.com/siteinfo/indiegames.com http://www.pentadact.com/2012-03-17-gdc-talk-how-to-explain-your-game-to-an-asshole/ http://www.alexa.com/siteinfo/indiegamemag.com# 231 subscribers, 71,750 video views http://www.alexa.com/siteinfo/gunpointgame.com# When it is itself.
