Adverbs An adverb is a word that modifies a verb. An adverb can tell how, when, or where. An adverb can come before or after the verb it modifies. The salmon swim upstream. They swim fast. Alex arose early. He and his father land the catch now. Alex quickly selects a pink salmon. Next, he picks a red one.
