Twitter Top Friends "The term constellation refers to a grouping of stellar objects that are seen as a configuration even though they may not be particularly close to one another, of the same kind, or of the same size...In the same way, there are many different reasons that some communities of practice may be seen as forming a constellation, by the people involved, or by an observer..." (p. 127). Etienne Wenger, in Communities of Practice Based on Wenger's "constellation of practice" metaphor, I endeavor to visually display some of ideas that inform the work I have been doing in Information Architecture. One important principle to remember that information does not always follow a linear progression. The mapping displayed here would be such an example. I am hoping to convey information about our coursework in this heterarchical structure. This is the color palette I designed with Kuler. What are some of the words or ideas that inform this community of practice? This Wordle, formed from my blog entries for Information Architecture, may shed some light on this question. This picture represents my "top friends" on Twitter. Most of the people shown here are in my class. We use Twitter to communicate about coursework, provide feedback, share information, and to encourage each other. This arrangement probably best shows the features of our network which most clearly appear to be a community of practice. This picture, made with Google's MyMap feature, shows the Rowan campus, as I remember it. "Our institutions, to the extent that they address issues of learning explicitly, are largely based on the assumption that learning is an indiviudal process, that it has a beginning and an end, that it is best separated from the rest of our activities, and that it is the result of teaching" (Wenger p. 3). I'm here. Where am I? But how did I get there? These people helped me. And because we all read these books, we have a common frame of reference. The Information Architecture syllabus serves as a guide for our class. It provides a parameters for us to follow. This is a set of articles, saved in my CiteULike folder, of academic interest to me. Note: I hate pictures. That's why I look so angry in the picture. One of the things I learned in this class is that writing is but one of many modes of communicating informaiton. We should not think writing is superior to other modes. Some of the people in our class served as a community of practice as we helped each other frequently with the course assignments. We learned from the texts, from our teachers, and from each other. This is a map I made from memory of Rowan University. It informed the development of my Google MyMap of Rowan "The sheer amount of levels of informaiton outside in the environment far exceed the amount of data and information inside the classroom...And the business of the teaching establishment is to train perception upon the outer environment instead of merely stenciling information upon the brain pans of children inside the environment." Marshall McLuhan in Understanding Me, p. 89. This information explains some of my Twitter habits. I talk only to people in class and often late at night. What might that data suggest about how I use Twitter? This is my Google MyMap, which was informed by my memory map.
This is my poster project.
